87834 “THE GREEN SCENE #8” 1970s U.S. ARMY NEWS MAGAZINE ARMY TRAVEL AGENCY DISASTER RELIEF

Dating to the post-Vietnam era of the mid-to-late 1970s, “The Green Scene” was a periodically issued U.S. Army film series, that promoted various aspects of Army life. In this episode (number 8), the focus is on the Army’s travel agency / vacation and recreation services, the importance of having a school diploma, the history and legacy of the U.S. Army’s infantry, and a look at the U.S. Army’s role in disaster assistance featuring images of the 1972 Nicaragua Earthquake. This is circa the 1970s.

Opening title: In Green Scene #8, Army Operated Recreation Programs (:06-:25). Title: I am the Infantry, followed by paintings/pictures of the army in action over the years (:26-:38). Fires blare, lights flash, a fire is raging. Earthquake damage. Title: The Army’s Role in Disaster Relief. Army bulldozers come into town. Booklet for Army Recreation and Travel Guide (:39-1:13). Army man talks to a travel coordinator who assists the travel. She mentions the Army Recreation and Travel Guide. Cottages, campers, canoes. Man skis. Snow covered mountains, ski trips, mountains in Germany. Ski lift. Woman in a bikini on a boat with a man. Summer flowers. Speed boat on the water. A couple sits on a beach. Surfing scene in Hawaii (1:14-2:59). The travel agent speaks to the Army man. Dirt bike riding. Horseback riding in the mountains. Hiking. Snow capped mountains, camping. Stream fishing (3:00-4:17). European vacation. Asian country. Broadway shows are available for visit. Stills of Broadway shows include: Pippin, That Championship Season, etc. The woman talks with the man, he can’t make up his mind. Armed Forces Chess Competition brochure. The man is pleased (4:18-5:46). Next segment: the importance of having a high school diploma. A sexy woman in a scene reminiscent of the TV show “I Dream of Jeanie” lies on a bed waiting for a man speaking seductively. POV shot as a man walks through an office, tons of attractive women turn and eye him. His new employer provides a nice desk and says, “You do have a high school diploma, right?” POV shot of shaking your head “no”. He’s fired from this dream job. (5:47-6:47). Next segment: “I am the Infantry”, a look at the heritage of the infantryman. Army infantry statue including Gen. George S. Patton memorial. Pictures of Army Infantry. Valley Forge, Yorktown, a glimmering sword. An early U.S. Flag. Battle paintings. Westward, horses and men go west. Vera Cruz paintings. Alamo in Texas. Appomattox. Lincoln and Davis. Civil War paintings (6:48-9:05). Men in trenches. The Hindenburg Line was a German defensive position built during the winter of 1916–1917 on the Western Front during the First World War, breached by U.S. Infantry. Infantry at Bataan. African shore. Anzio. Rome. English Channel. Beaches of Normandy. In the Pacific. Peace sign. Korea. Frozen land. Lebanon sands. Infantry symbol. Army soldiers in swamps and paddies (9:06-11:09). Soldiers in the jungle. Army statue (11:10-11:39). Next segment: Army officer gets his leave. Images of menu, beach, women. Animation of a man on an elephant. On a camel, cold, in a desert. Planes, trains, paperwork for leave including separation orders. Military ID card. Man picks up suitcases. Brochures spin. Man looks at brochure. Train moves fast in a station. Man boards a train and is happy (11:40-14:04). Next segment: U.S. Army involvement in disaster relief. Fires rage. Natural disaster. Damage as a result of a magnitude 6.3 earthquake in Nicaragua. Buildings ruined, cracks in roads, fires. Injured people. Pile of boxes. Poles are shifted, trucks come into town. Fires in distance, smoke plumes. Aerial earthquake damage shots (14:05-15:43). Army unit gathers trucks and supplies, ready to move out. Army men help clean up rubble. Injured put into triage. Water is offered. Bulldozers used to clean up. U.S. flag waves in the breeze. Damaged buildings, helicopter flies over city (15:44-17:08). Title: The Green Scene (17:09-17:26). No end credits.
