87684 1960s HOME MOVIE TRIP TO INDONESIA JAKARTA BANDUNG “PARIS IN JAVA” RICE FARMING

This well shot silent 16mm home movie shows a trip to Indonesia undertaken by an American tourist in the 1960s. The film begins with images shot in Jakarta including the famed Hotel Indonesia designed by Neal A. Prince, visible at 1:09. Various other buildings shown include a modern government building or hotel at 1:30, and Dutch colonial buildings shown at 1:43, and what might be a school at 1:55. (If you recognize these buildings please leave comments). At 3:10 a fish market is shown. At 8:30 goats have a ramming or head butting contest.

At 14:07 the Gedung Sate in Bandbung is shown, one of the many beautiful buildings that earned this area the nickname “Paris in Java”. This government building was completed in 1924. At 14:17 a charming shopping district is shown.

At 12:49 the Villa Isola is shown. This is an art-deco building in the northern part of Bandung, the capital of West Java province of Indonesia. Overlooking the valley with the view of the city, Villa Isola was completed in 1933 by the Dutch architect Wolff Schoemaker for the Dutch media tycoon Dominique Willem Berretty, the founder of the Aneta press-agency in the Dutch East Indies. The original purpose of the building was for Berretty’s private house, but then it was transformed into a hotel after his death and now it serves as the headmastership office of the University of Education Indonesia.

One of the sights seen at 14:35 is the Swarha Islamic Building, built in 1930 – 1935 by Dutch architect Wolff Schoemaker. It was originally used as a lodging for the honoured guest country and the journalists for Asia-Africa Conference in 1955. This building has an important role as one of Bandung historical art deco heritage, with the art deco typefaces styles on its singage. Wolff Schoemaker was trying to combine the elements between eastern and western culture in design.

At 15:44 a Durian fruit is cut open for the visitor. A local craftsman shows off shoes at 16:30. At 16:38 oxen are used to plow a rice paddy. Rice seedlings are shown as well as stalks through 18;43. Local children are shown at 21:10 while rice is poured into a storage container.
