86914 1930s GIBRALTAR TRAVELOGUE ROCK OF GIBRALTAR & GATEWAY TO MEDITERRANEAN SEA

This black & white educational film is about Gibraltar. This was made in 1934. Gibraltar, a British overseas territory occupying a narrow peninsula of Spain’s southern Mediterranean coast, is just northeast of the Strait of Gibraltar. It’s dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, a 426m-high limestone ridge.

Opening titles: RKO Radio Pictures presents Gibraltar – Vagabond Adventure Series. A Van Beuren Production (:06-:38). Turning our backs on the atlantic as we enter the Mediterranean through the straits of Gibraltar. Gibraltar is most famous for The Rock of Gibraltar, a 426 meter high limestone rock rising out of the sea. The rock can be seen for many miles. A seaman looks out with binoculars. The pillars of Hercules. People in the bay on boats. People try to tempt the tourists with their wares. On British soil, Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory. A man walks up a paved road. Overlooking the shipping bay. Barracks. The docks where an entire fleet is. Naval stores, dry docks (:39-2:33). The Strait of Gibraltar is a narrow strait that separates Gibraltar and Spain. The Rock of Gibraltar. Only British can stay there all the time, aliens must leave at night and return the next day. Alien migrants on the sands of Gibraltar. On the western slope above town. The village of Catalan. Slowly going down a paved road. A man walks with a donkey through town. Donkeys in town waiting. Peddlers walk downtime streets with a wagon. They are almost hit by a car. A street photographer takes pictures of military men, shows them. A woman feeds pigeons (2:34-5:37). People walk on a narrow street with donkeys. A donkey cries a wagon that has a barrel of water for sale on it. A boy fills pails of water for sale. The boy carries a pail up the stairs. An older woman looks dirty. Two children stand by dolls. Another little girl holds a smaller child. Boys look at the camera. A wagon goes down a paved road (5:38-7:32). Off the ship, a view of the Rock of Gibraltar. A lighthouse on Europa Point (7:33-7:52). End credits (7:53-8:01).
