This film takes a look at the Federal Service Joint Crusade which was comprised of non-government charities including the American Korean Foundation, Radio Free Europe, CARE USA and Project Hope. It dates to roughly 1963. The film asks the American people to donate to these charities to help with, among other things, the further rebuilding of South Korea. The narrator of is game show host John Cameron Swayze (1:27). The first charity looked at is the American Korean Foundation (1:32) and begins with scenes from the Korean War (1:47) that had left nearly four million refugees. Two million casualties were recorded and 100,000 children were left without caretakers (1:57). AKF built orphanages (2:10) as well as clinics and hospitals (2:13). They operated mobile medical clinics to bring treatment to rural areas of the country (2:16) and set up vocational training schools (2:38). Youth learned building construction (2:39) and were shown how to use earth blocks to make homes for only $100 (2:41). They also provided 4-H clubs (2:58). Many people suffering from various diseases after the war’s end including 100,000 cases of leprosy. A patient is lifted into the back of a jeep (3:18). A breakdown of what donations to AKF translated into follows (3:32) as well as a plea for donations. Radio Free Europe was founded in 1949 as an anti-Communist propaganda source. During the Cold War it was broadcasted to the Soviet satellite countries of Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania and Bulgaria (3:57). Scenes from within the ‘Iron Curtain’ in eastern Europe follow (4:28) where there was heavy censorship. Contributions to this program enable RFE to broadcast news reports and analysis into these areas (4:52). The inside of one of RFE radio stations is shown (5:04) and letters from listeners thanking RFE for it’s work (5:25). All of the programs were written and broadcasted by exiles from Eastern Europe (5:42) and supervised by Americans. A poster for Edith Piaf is shown, she was a French singer and one of France’s most widely known international stars (5:53). Project Hope is a global health and humanitarian relief organization founded in 1958 (6:28). They operated in areas which were prone to disease such as Vietnam, Indonesia, Peru, Ecuador, and Guinea (6:45). Nurses are seen waving aboard ship (7:00). The organization trained thousands of medical personnel. The hospital ship SS Hope is seen (7:10). Staff conducted 700 major operations in Indonesia and treated about 18,000. A massive x-ray screening program (7:25) used to detect and combat tuberculosis is highlighted. In south Vietnam, they conducted an immunization program which administered a quarter of a million vaccines (7:30). Orthopedic and dental training programs (7:41). In Peru, the SS Hope maintained a 230 bed teaching hospital aboard ship (7:52) as well as a clinical program for a 500-bed clinic on land. On a daily basis they treated about 100 patients and were able to perform about 250 major surgical operations monthly (7:58). Nurses and doctors provided lectures aboard ship for local personnel so that they could operate health clinics (8:10). The SS Hope was to be making a new endeavor to Africa next (8:26). CARE USA was founded in 1945 and is an international humanitarian agency which provides emergency relief as well as long term international development projects (8:49). Over half of the world’s population is undernourished and inability to get access to healthy food and drinking water leads to underdevelopment and malnutrition (9:06). A CARE worker hands a CARE box to crowds under a sign reading “Paris American Christmas Fund” (9:18). A breakdown of a $2 donation which, through the Friendship Garden Program, enabled enough seeds to be purchased for one family to grow 1,000 pounds of crops (9:40). Food was also used as wages for workers who were building irrigation systems (10:12), fishing boats or other necessary facilities that would increase production and growth. CARE also had a medical program (10:23) and supplied tool kits and school supplies to youth (10:45). They were able to educate 7 and a ½ million annually in public health and hygiene (10:58). The chairmen of FSJC and Secretary of Agriculture, Orville Freeman (11:27) then reads an address from President Lyndon B. Johnson prior to giving a final plea to viewers for contributions to the charities of FSJC (12:25). A Harvest Films production (13:46).
