Directed by John Morris of Australia’s Commonwealth Film Unit (CFU) in 1956, ROAD TO THE CLOUDS is a spectacular documentary shot in Vistarama / Cinemascope in the New Guinea highlands. The film shows how, under the supervision of Australian patrol officers, the people of the New Guinea highlands build a road to link their districts to the coast. Some of the sections of road that the Land Rover drivers cruise over, defies explanation — you have to see it to believe it!
New Guinea (Tok Pisin: Niugini; Dutch: Nieuw-Guinea; Indonesian: Papua or, historically, Irian) is a large Island in the South West Pacific region.
It is the world’s second-largest island, after Greenland, covering a land area of 785,753 km2, and the largest wholly within the southern hemisphere.
The island is divided among two countries: Papua New Guinea to the east, and Indonesia to the west.
