This black and white film is one of the episodes of “Yesterday’s Newsreels”, an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features eight segments of historic highlights. Jimmy Walker Story 1925-1932. “Beau” James is shown as a Senator, going on to be a liberal Democrat mayor of New York City. The group of men are dressed in 1925 overcoats over suits and wearing hats with wide bands. He shakes hands with Giants player John McGraw and throws the first pitch at the New York Polo Ground. He receives the thoroughbred Cedar King as a gift. Walker is shown with Commander Richard Ebert before his Antarctic expedition. He puts on a large fur hat as spokesman for the Fur Union. 1928, Walker is shown with President Coolidge. At a NYC parade, Walker is shown with Lilyan Andrus, Miss America 1929. Ramsay MacDonald, Prime Minister of England, visits NY. Walker donates one of his berets. Judge Samuel Seabury exposes the corrupt Tammany Hall, forcing Walker out of office. He marries actress Betty Compton (:42-5:33). Mechanical Strings Reach Millions 1922. Early footage is shown of a radio broadcasting set. The singers were accompanied by musicians. Shown is a Mills Violano Virtuoso, which consisted of a mechanical violin and piano mechanism. Early 1920s microphones are shown, as are 1920s headphones (5:35-6:27). Personalities 1920. Ohio Congressman Nicholas Longworth poses with his wife Alice, President Teddy Roosevelt’s daughter (6:28-6:54). Mabel Willebrandt, Assistant Attorney General from 1921-1929, works at her desk (6:55-7:14). Violinists Jascha Heifetz and Efrem Zimbalist are shown (7:15-7:32). Pueblo Flood 1921. Scenes of smashed buildings, flooded streets, and derailed train cars are shown of the June flood in Pueblo, Colorado are shown (7:33-18:46). Monticello Becomes American Memorial 1923. President Jefferson’s home is preserved as a memorial (18:47-9:29). Aviation 1925. The dirigible Los Angeles is moored at sea for refueling (9:30-10:08). Fashions of the Day 1922. Modeled are a 1922 midi-length afternoon floral dress, an evening dress with a low square-cut back, a gown with an overdress of net and embroidery, and an ermine cape lined in velvet (10:10-10:55). Sports 1926. Golfer Mrs. G. Henry Stetson and Mrs. W.D. Goss tee off at the Pennsylvania Golf Links Women’s National Golf Tournament. Mrs. Stetson poses with her trophy and two daughters (10:57-11:37). 1927, bicyclists line up for the race from Elgin to Chicago. Charles Barrett hands the Loving Cup to winner Jimmy Morton (11:38-12:17).
