85484 ” THE RHINE FROM KOLN TO MAINZ ” 1940 RHINE RIVER CRUISE PRE-WAR COLOGNE, BONN, GERMANY

This black & white educational film is about the sights seen from the Rhine river from Koln (Cologne) to Mainz, Germany. This type of scenic cruise has been a popular pastime for many decades, and remains popular to this day. This film also shows the harvesting of grapes and other activities in the communities along the river. This film was made in 1940 and photographed by Otto Trippel, who created numerous films with his “Otto Trippel Kulturfilm-Produktion”. For Wien-Film he created the films “Evening at the Lake” and “Blossoms and Fruits”.

Opening title: The Rhine from Koln to Mainz (:08-:17). Koln aka Cologne, Germany, is the largest and most important city on the Rhine. Aerial shot of the city shows it’s churches and taller buildings. Boats on the Rhine. Smoke billows near a church. A cathedral shown top to bottom (:18-2:03). Cologne’s town hall building, erected in the 14th century. A barge on the Rhine, a bridge over the river. Barge goes under a bridge and down the Rhine. Men move a case onto a boat. People on a boat on the Rhine. Boats on the Rhine. A university in Bonn. The University of Bonn is a public research university located in Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. A farmers market outside. Women package grapes for a customer. Bonn is the birthplace for Beethoven and a statue is shown. House where Beethoven was born is a museum. Inside the museum, a bust of Beethoven. Barge on the Rhine, houses near the river’s edge (2:04-4:52). Roland’s Arch, people stand under the arch. The Siebengebirge or Seven Mountains, are a hill range of the German Central Uplands on the east bank of the Middle Rhine, southeast of Bonn, the island of Nonnenwerth. Town of Andernach. Castles and buildings. A sheepherder (4:53-6:04). Koblenz, where the Mosel river flows into the Rhine river. People look at this and point. Deutsches Eck is the name of a headland in Koblenz, Germany, where the Mosel river joins the Rhine. Named after a local commandry of the Teutonic Order, it became known for a monumental equestrian statue of William I, first German Emperor, erected in 1897 in appreciation for his role in the unification of Germany. A face under a clock moves. Cars on a bridge. A riverboat. A bridge is being put back together to cross. Ancient fortress of Ehrenbreitstein is seen from a boat on the river’s edge. Town of Rhens. Houses. A wagon tows sticks. Barges on the river. People walk. A sidewheel steamboat on the river, with another, Elberfeld Rhine steamer visible at (8:23). A train goes by. People enjoy food on a moving train in the dining car, they look out the window. Waiters

(6:05-9:01). Boats on the river as seen from the train. Train cars go by. Boats go down the river, a couple watches with a tent set up nearby. A fishing boat anchored. A tourist boat. Men and women walk up high on a hill and stare down. Women pick grapes in a vineyard. Going down the Rhine (9:02-10:49). Loreley rock, home of folk lore and legend. Boats pass one another on the Rhine. Boys on the river’s edge. On a small island in the Rhine is Castle Caub. The castle as seen from a riverboat. A castle on a hill. The Rhine from up high. The ruins of Castle Ehrenfels overlook the Rhine. A boat down below on the Rhine. A man exits a wagon. Boats on the Rhine (10:50-13:11). An ancient cathedral in Mainz. A tugboat on the Rhine. A building in Mainz. The art of printing was invented by Johann Gutenberg, who was born in Mainz, a bust of him is shown. A hand turns a book that has printed words in it. A woman eats grapes, other women pick grapes in a vineyard. Hands pull grapes, they are then laid in a basket. A woman eats grapes. Men make wine. Glasses of wine on a table toast one another (13:12-15:45). People dance in the streets. A man plays an accordion. Another plays a guitar and sings. Men and women listen and smile.Boats on the rhine. Mountains, the sun over the Rhine (15:46-16:59). End credits (17:00-17:02).
