This black and white film is one of the episodes of “Yesterday’s Newsreels”, an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features nine segments of historic highlights. 1934-1950 General “Hap” Arnold. 1934, Lieutenant Colonel Arnold is shown instructing army bomber pilots. He enters a Martin B-10 bomber. The pilots put on hats covered in mosquito netting. The bombers fly in formation to Alaska and back. Secretary of War George Dern congratulates the successful mass flight. 1942, Arnold is Commanding General of the Army. Bombers fly in formation and engage in dog fights, downing an enemy plane. 1950, Arnold’s funeral procession and gun salute are shown (:40-3:35). 1926 Provincetown Pilgrims. The Cape Cod beach is full of artists with their easels. Paintings in progress, including one with a model in a 1920s bathing suit (3:38-4:15). 1936 Last Brisbane Story. Hearst syndicate newspaper editor Arthur Brisbane speaks into a 1930s Dictaphone dictation machine. 1936, Governor Herbert Lehman, Postmaster General James Farley, boxer Gene Tunney, William Randolph Hearst, and businessman Bernard Gimbel attend Brisbane’s funeral at St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York City (4:18-5:15). 1928 Personalities. Indiana Governor Paul V. McNutt shakes hands (5:18-5:42). Comedic actress Edna Wallace wears a 1926 large Cloche hat, pearl necklace, and beaded center pin (5:43-6:03). Silent comedian Lloyd Hamilton acts up for the camera (6:04-6:24). 1922 Lightning Strikes! 130,000 gallons of naphtha burns near San Pablo, California after lightning strikes one of the tanks (6:26-7:05). 1921 Troops Home from Rhine. The doughboys return home to a clapping crowd that includes smiling wives and children (7:08-7:50). 1927 Aviation. Five hot air balloons race from Detroit to North Carolina (7:54-8:57). 1926 Fashions of the Day. Greenwich Village. A woman smokes a cigarette. Portrait painter Helen Thurlow sketches a model with a boyish bob wearing short shorts. A model wearing Oxford ghillie shoes and a 1926 knee-length afternoon dress walks a duck. Another wears a coat made of muskrat with a raccoon collar. Two Persian cats join the duck to have their portraits painted. An evening dance features the foxtrot, accompanied by banjo and trumpet players (9:00-10:28). Sports. 1934. Ireland versus New York hurling players compete for the championship at the Polo Grounds and Innes Vale Park (10:31-11:25). 1928. Olympic and Hollywood Athletic Clubs compete for the water polo championship in San Francisco (11:26-12:10).
