This black and white film is one of the episodes of “Yesterday’s Newsreels”, an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features eight segments of historic highlights. Will Rogers 1921-1935. 1921- Rogers, wearing a suit, performs a rope trick as part of a Ziegfeld Follies act with Tom Mix. 1927- Will poses with his wife and children. He performs at a rodeo in Mexico. Will tells Universal Studios founder Carl Laemmle he’s going to represent the audience. 1926 – Will becomes mayor of Beverly Hills and receives the key to the city. 1928 – Dressed in black tie clothing, Will is the speaker at the Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner. 1932 – Will introduces candidate Roosevelt. 1935 – Will boards a plane with aviator Wiley Post in the last video taken before the plane crashed in Alaska, killing both men (:40-4:33). Floats for Safety 1931. Captain Vincent Richards demonstrates his full-body inflatable rubber suit as he lies on his back and paddles himself through the water. An outboard motor is attached to a hand-pumped-up rubber boat (4:34-5:38). Personalities. 1926 – Two women pose with the first California Chinese candidate John H. Wong, holding up campaign posters with his name and picture on the front (5:39-6:06). 1921 – Actress Mary McCormack smiles and waves for the camera. She wear very large double-hoop earrings and a 1920s Toque hat (6:07-6:28). Former Giants pitcher Lieutenant Al Williams is shown in his U.S. Navy uniform (6:29-6:50). Knickerbocker Theatre Disaster 1922. The Knickerbocker Theatre collapsed without warning due to heavy snow, killing 98. Workers carefully work through the rubble. The destruction is surveyed from every angle and shown up-close (6:51-8:20). Brushing Up 1926. A large classroom of children are shown simultaneously vigorously brushing their teeth. A school dentist looks inside a student’s mouth as he sits in a 1920s dentist chair. Children wear “Clean Teeth” placards and brush their teeth, holding a metal cup of water (8:21-9:20). Aviation 1929. The first plane to have tricycle landing gear is displayed (9:21-9:57). Fashions of the Day 1915. Pre-WWI, a ladies’ bowling outfit consisted of a midi-length sack-like skirt and jumper-type blouse. The men bowlers are dressed in suit pants, stiff-collared long-sleeved shirts with wide stripes, vests, and ties. 1915, the female bowler wears a bell-shaped skirt. The group of female bowlers are in fancier dresses and have Gibson Girl hairstyles (9:58-11:02). Sports 1933. The crowd gathers for the 65th running of the Belmont Stakes. The race is shown, with Thoroughbred horse Hurryoff moving from near the back to win as the 12:1 longshot (11:03-12:23).
