This WWII survival film, LAND AND LIVE IN THE JUNGLE (Part 1) dramatizes the survival of the crew of a downed military aircraft in the jungle. The film features Van Heflin as Lieutenant Lynn Harrison. The film was intended to offer practical information for downed fliers, but also to boost the morale of flight crews who might have to make a forced landing in the Pacific campaign.

In the film, four crewman rely on teamwork to make their survival fairly easy — using the jungle’s resources to their advantage. On the other hand Captain Harris panics and ends up paying a terrible price. The film includes many helpful hints from how to use a signal mirror, how to create a hammock from your parachute or how to use it as a net to catch fish, and how to deal with native Pacific islanders. There’s also discussions about how to avoid large predators and snakes, treating scrapes & wounds to avoid jungle rot, plants and fruits to use and avoid, what fish and animals are safe to eat, etc. The film also shows how to set up a primitive kitchen, the use of Halazone & Atabrine tablets to purify water and fight Malaria, how to set traps and snares to catch small animals and birds, how to deal with and prevent insect bites, how to get rid of leeches, etc. There is also information about how to prepare food in the jungle, how to construct a campsite, build and use a river raft, and more.
