A woman wearing a 1960s Jackie Kennedy style suit and pillbox hat waits with her husband in his 1960s suit and hat at the train station. A teenage boy pulls up in a 1950s convertible. The train arrives and a sailor gets off and greets his family. The boys park in the driveway of a suburban 1960s neighborhood. The sailor greets a pretty girl next door. Dinner is served with a 1960s kitchen as the backdrop. The dad wears 1960s large black frame glasses and smokes a pipe (:35-4:48). The sailor visits his brother’s rocket club meeting, held in a 1960s classroom with a large globe. He shows them photos of a nuclear submarine (4:49-6:45). The USS Nautilus disappears under water. An “Adventure in Inner Space” Navy poster sits outside a Post Office. The student meets with a recruiter at his office and in the family’s 1960s living room. Outside of it are submarines. Submariners study in the library (13:44-15:02). Sailors train using a life jacket enclosed over their head. A sailor rises to the top of the water. Training is next on a submarine (368), which leaves the dock and moves through the water. The submarine dives and the sailors practice their new skills (15:03-19:29). The sailor receives his Silent Service Dolphin pin and Petty Officer stripe. Students enter the Nuclear Power School. The sign reads “Man’s way through life is sustained by the power of his knowledge.” The submariners sit in classrooms and study. The students work on machines in the school (19:30-21:15). The submariners board their first nuclear submarine (588). Quarters are shown. The sub heads out and dives. Sailors play checkers, cards, listen to and play music, watch movies, eat, and have Bible study. The sub re-emerges (21:16-23:45. Sailors visiting foreign ports have their pictures taken with women, pick up a dropped package, bicycle and visit a graveyard. The nuclear submarine returns. A Polaris missile emerges from an underwater fleet ballistic submarine (23:36-26:20). The submariner settles into his bunk after gazing at his Dolphin pin. He finishes his classroom talk. He leaves again on the train (26:21-28:30).
