81794 NORTHROP F-18 HORNET PROTOTYPE AT PARIS AIR SHOW 1977 “ODYSSEY 1977”

This color educational/promotional film is about the new Northrop F-18 prototype Navy Hornet jet, which was displayed at the 32nd Annual Air and Space Exposition in Paris, France at the Le Bourget Airport. This was made in 1978.

Northrop’s F-18 prototype Navy Hornet jet taxis out and then is flying in the air. Opening titles: F-18 Hornet Prototype Odyssey 77 (:09-:27). The Northrop F-18 flies. The plane is serviced on the ground. POV from inside the cockpit as it takes off at dusk. The plane flies high. It flies over a populated city. Eiffel Tower, Paris, France. A boat goes down the River Seine. The Arc de Triomphe de l’Etoile is the most famous arch in Paris. It is 50 metres high and 45 metres wide and was built between 1806 and 1836. It pays tribute to the soldiers who fought and died for France in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. A police officer directs traffic. A man paints by the Seine. Flags of many countries wave in the wind as the 32nd Annual Air and Space Exposition begins in Paris, France at the Le Bourget Airport. Many planes are on display as is the Concorde. Lots of people. The Spirit of St. Louis, flown by Charles Lindbergh is on display as is the Northrop F-18 prototype Navy jet. A man takes a picture of the jet (:28-2:31). The bombs of the jet are on it. A military jet takes off. An AWAC flies above the crowd, the AWAC (Airborne Warning And Control System), is a mobile, long-range radar surveillance and control centre for air defense. The system, as developed by the U.S. Air Force, is mounted in a specially modified Boeing 707 aircraft. Planes perform tricks in the sky. A 329 Squadron RAF takes off. A helicopter does tricks as does other planes. A Boeing YC-14 comes in for a landing. An F-14 Tomcat performs maneuvers. AN F-39 jet. Helicopters. A man propels from a helicopter. A plane does a trick. People line up with cameras (2:32-4:29). Northrop’s F-18 prototype Navy Hornet jet picks up speed on the runway and takes off as people watch. Once in the air it does quick maneuvers. POV shots from inside the plane. It does a flyby to see the undercarriage of it. It then does a 360 in the sky. The F-18 continues to fly and show off what it can do (4:30-7:26). The F-18 comes in for a landing in the USA. Sign for: Main Gate N.A.S. Oceana Apollo Soucek Field Master Jet Base. Officers look at the plane. Officers are gathered to watch the jet perform. The Northrop F-18 takes off and flies. Sign: MCAS Beaufort, S.C., Home of MAG 31. Officers discuss as the Jet flies above them. Navy Air Station Cecil, Duval County, FL. Officers look at the jet’s thrusters. The F-18 does a 360 spin. Men look skyward. Sign reads: “Welcome Aboard Northrop A-18 Prototype Nas Lemoore, Light Attack is Where it’s At.” People gather around the jet. The jet does a complete 360 in the sky. Sign: M.C.A.S. El Toro Welcomes You. El Toro, CA. The jet does a high performance aerial demonstration (7:27-11:18). End credits (11:19-11:25).
