80574 BARRIER CRASH LANDING OF F-8 CRUSADER AIRCRAFT

What you’re looking at here is a 16mm film shot off of an aircraft carrier’s on-board closed circuit television system. The film shows an F-8 Crusader making a landing pass at about :20 seconds, but the plane fails to catch the cable with its hook. The aircraft makes a go-around but apparently there is a problem. The crew then deploys the barrier system so that the aircraft can make an arrested landing, around 3:11 you can see them beginning to set it up. At 5:00 the entire deck crew is busy securing the barrier. At 7:20 the barrier is up and the view returns to the deck POV of the sky, with the aircraft streaking in towards destiny. At 8:00 the aircraft hits the deck. Markings on the tail of the aircraft “NM” indicate it was likely part of CVG-19, Carrier Air Group 19, tail 50335, VF-191 “Satan’s Kittens” although precise information is still needed.

In this short silent film, shot by the Pilot Landing Aid Television system, known as PLAT, a crippled Vought F-8 Crusader makes a barrier landing. The Mark-V barricade shown in the film was developed to arrest disabled aircraft which, for whatever reason, are not able to land by conventional “hook on a cable” means. In this instance, the landing is a success, the pilot walked away unscathed and the aircraft was salvageable.
