79614 1945 ARMY AIR FORCES COMBAT BULLETIN 84 GERMAN ARADO AR 234 BLITZ BOMBER

Made in 1945 after the German surrender, this WWII combat bulletin was produced by the Army Air Forces. It shows various combat scenes and developments, starting with the use of JATO bottles for aircraft at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio. At 1:40, bomb damage is seen at Mainz, Germany including extensive damage to the city’s railway terminals and electric power plant. At 2:20, Worms Germany is seen almost entirely decimated by bomb strikes, although the cathedral is seen relatively intact. At 3:30, the German Arado 234 jet bomber is seen, captured intact after a belly landing. The Arado was the world’s first operational jet-powered bomber, built by the German Arado company in the closing stages of World War II. Produced in very limited numbers, it was used almost entirely in the reconnaissance role, but in its few uses as a bomber it proved to be nearly impossible to intercept. It was the last Luftwaffe aircraft to fly over Britain during the war, in April 1945

At 5:20, bomb damage is seen in Bologna, Italy, including wrecked bridges and railroad lines that kept the Germans from moving troops to the front. At 6:50, a crash-landed B-17 Flying Fortress is seen burning on the runway at Lucera, Italy. At 8:00, the film switches to the Pacific Theater where aerial bombing of Burma and China is seen in the China-Burma-India Theater, including at 10:00 a strike at Kweilin, China, where the 14th Air Force used to have a gigantic air base.

At 10:50, captured Japanese aircraft are seen displayed at Clark Field in the Philippines, including a Mitsubishi Ki-46, known to the Allies as Dinah. This was a twin-engine reconnaissance aircraft used by the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy in World War II, and one of the fastest twin engine planes in the world. A Japanese George is also shown at 11:29, and a Tony and a Nick are also seen at the air field. A Betty bomber and an Irving night fighter, a Lilly, Irving, Zeke, Tojo, Frank and other aircraft are also shown. A Frank, aka the Nakajima Ki-84 Hayatewas single-seat fighter, is seen being test flown at 12:45. Featuring excellent performance and high maneuverability, the Ki-84 was considered to be the best Japanese fighter to see large scale operations during World War II. Its powerful armament (that could include two 30 mm and two 20 mm cannon) increased its lethality.

At 13:11, close air support at Luzon, Philippines is shown in detail.
