79414 “FABULOUS CALIFORNIA” 1964 PAN AM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA & LAS VEGAS TRAVELOGUE

This 1964 color travelogue film visits Hollywood, Yosemite, and San Francisco in California, as well as Las Vegas in Nevada. It was produced by Columbia Pictures Corporation for Pan American Airlines (:10) and is voiced by Canadian actor Paul Maxwell. Shown are Pan American Boeing 707 Jet Clippers (:28) at LAX. Many 1960s vehicles are shown in the opening sequence (:52), including passing the Theme Building at LAX (1:09). Swimmers in 1960s bathing suits enjoy the hotel pool (1:30). Grauman’s Chinese Theatre (2:03) is a famous Hollywood landmark, bearing the handprints and footprints of Mary Pickford in 1927 (2:11) and others, including Colleen Moore, Peter Blondes, and Sophia Loren (2:17-2:32). Palm trees and flowers line the streets (2:36). A crowd visits Marineland of the Pacific, a now closed oceanarium and animal show (3:03-4:40). While the film calls it Boulder Dam (4:43-5:03), it’s official name is Hoover Dam. The Las Vegas Convention Center (5:15) and bird’s eye view of the hotels is shown, with their large swimming pools (5:25). A woman with one of the large upswept hairstyles of 1964 wears a pink bikini with the larger bottom style (5:44), followed by three women in the smaller bikini styles (5:53-6:28). A quick trip to Las Vegas shows the famous neon “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada” sign (6:29). Casinos on the strip include the Sahara (6:35), the Stardust, the Las Vegas Club, the Silver Palace, and The Mint (6:45-6:57), the Nevada Club (7:01), the Horseshoe (7:19), the Golden Nugget (7:24), the Pioneer Club (7:40), Club Bingo (7:47), and the Golden Gate (7:51). Back in California, we visit Yosemite National Park (8:04) with its waterfalls and tumbling streams (8:15-8:22), Sequoias trees you can drive through (8:29), El Capitan (8:42), Half Dome (9:05), Bridalveil Fall (9:22), and peaceful lakes with mountain reflections (9:45-9:56). The Golden Gate Bridge (9:59) leads to San Francisco (10:10). A 1964 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible rounds the corner (10:38). Personal boats wait at marinas (11:21) and sailboats enjoy the harbor (11:34-11:54). A man looks through a viewfinder (12:01) at the Alcatraz Island prison (12:06). A ferry boat (12:18-13:30) provides a different view of the bridges and land. Fresh caught fish is brought to Fisherman’s Wharf (13:34). San Francisco also has a Chinatown (13:51-14:19). Union Square (14:30), a center of commerce, provides transportation via a cable car (15:02-16:25) through the hilly streets. An elevator climbs up the outside of a hotel (16:28) followed by panoramic views.
