78284 ARMY-NAVY FOOTBALL GAME 1944 WORLD WAR II GAME OF THE CENTURY

This issue of the Army-Navy Screen Magazine of the Screen features the 1944 edition of the Army-Navy Football game, the original “Game of the Century” that saw Army ranked #1 in the nation, and Navy ranked #2. As it turned out, Army was on its way to win a National Championship. Held in Baltimore, the game was attended by many of WWII’s great leaders including (at 2 minute mark) General George C. Marshall, General Ben Lear, General Hap Arnold, Admiral King, Admiral Leahy. The Navy goat and the Army’s mule are seen at the 2:30 mark.

At the game, it was announced that War Bond sales totaling $58,637,000, the amount fans purchased with their tickets for the game.

Why the game of the century — well, every year the Army and Navy football teams meet for one epic game. But December 2, 1944 was different — America was in the midst of World War II, with sacrifices made by everyone.

Navy’s team was ranked number two, Army’s number one and on the verge of becoming national champions. Everywhere, the war stopped as soldiers listened to the broadcast…

Army wins toss and kicks off. (#47) Clyde Scott runs kick back for long return. Army’s Glenn Davis makes good gain (#41). Army’s Hall (#42) goes for TD. Navy gains on Hamburg to Hansen pass. Hamburg runs for short yardage. Scott scores Navy TD, score: Army 9 — Navy 7. Army Plebe, CU Glenn Davis, Felix Blanchard drives for TD. Minor pitches out to Glenn Davis for another Army TD. Final score 23-7 on scoreboard.
