77664 AIR POWER IS PEACE POWER 1948 EDDIE RICKENBACKER FILM (Print 1)

Made in 1948 in an attempt to educate the American public and lobby Congress, AIR POWER AND PEACE POWER features Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker of Eastern Airlines speaking about the future of aviation. The title of the film was part of a slogan used throughout the aviation and defense industry in this era, to promote a strong military-industrial research and development effort that would simultaneously advance aviation technology while strengthening U.S. defense. The film mostly centers around a young journalist who is dispatched to take a flight on a new Lockheed Constellation. The plane’s luxurious interior is seen, along with its high-tech flight controls and four engined power. At one point, three of the plane’s four engines are idled to demonstrate the safety of civil aviation and the Constellation in particular. Once the flight is concluded, the film once again features Rickenbacker, now speaking about the need for Congress to grant a $25 million r&d effort so that a civilian jet liner the size of a Constellation can be built. The film shows various images of the future of aviation including the jet powered Northrop YB-49 Flying Wing at the 26 minute mark, and a passenger mock-up of the flying wing. There is also color footage of B-29s, a dive bomber striking a target with rockets, a JATO take-off of a B-47 Stratojet and a P-59 Black Widow. New jet engines are shown at the 27 minute mark, and early jet fighters including the P-80, and the test firing of an Americanized V-2 rocket. The Bell X-1 rocket plane flown by Chuck Yeager is also seen at the 27:50 mark.
