76484 “ AIR FORCE ROTC FIELD TRAINING ” 1971 USAF ROTC RECRUITMENT & INDOCTRINATION FILM

This brief film shows a slice of the AFROTC training program. It follows yound students as they are inducted into the program following them as they partake in various studies throughout the program ending with graduation. The film opens with the USAF seal (:09). A field training assignment is stuck to the bulletin board at one of the many AFROTC detachments set up at one of the 170 college and universities throughout the nation. The bulletin is zoomed in on (:38). The ROTC mission is discussed (:41). A Chevrolet Chevelle drives through the check in (:52) to the USAF base for ROTC training. A passenger plane of the Piedmont Airline unloads passengers (1:11). New ROTC attendees head for processing and registration (1:26). Travel orders are checked (1:32). Photographs are taken (1:58). Attendees exit processing with their new clothing issues (2:04). A member of one of the flights enters his sleeping quarters (2:10). The narrator notes a yellow baseball cap particular to this detachment (2:21). Rooms of the female flight members appear (2:30). The flight training officer meets with individual students (2:41) and later the entire flight (2:58). Students assemble for the first day of training (3:19). A billboard welcomes students for orientation (3:21). Colonel Robinson; the Field Training Unit Commander addresses the class (3:27). Students receive a tour of the base (4:32) beginning with the chapel. The hospital (4:35), the VOQ room (4:36), the officers club (4:39), base ops (4:41), hangars (4:42), the flight line (4:44) and base housing (4:45) are visited. Physical training exercises begin (4:55). Leaders in each category are changed every three days (5:19). Drills are practiced in front of base headquarters (5:35). A traffic controller communicates with incoming and outgoing aircrafts (9:12). A teletype is used in the controller’s office (9:18). Security police students (9:26) peer at the desk; the nerve center of base security. The base engineer inspects the quality of the runways (9:36). Students enjoy a lunch hosted by the officers club (9:59). Hospitality evening (10:07) is hosted at an officer’s home. The small arms familiarization (10:17) course is featured. Survival orientation teaches students survival skills on the water and on land (10:46). Land survival training is conducted in a field near the base (11:08). Students learn to make snares (11:28). Various fires are demonstrated (11:35). A red flare is burned for a rescue demonstration (12:18). The Kaman HH 43 Huskie is utilized for this action (12:42). Parachutes pop (13:01) as students drop to the ground. ROTC students visit another base and the Lockheed C141 (13:18). They board for an orientation flight (13:25). Sunday service is pictured (13:33). Student learn automotive maintenance (13:43). Trips to beaches serve as recreation (13:50). Athletics trainings include softball (14:06) and volleyball (14:12). Female students take to the bowling lanes (14:32). The finale of athletics is field day (14:53). ROTC students jam their faces with pie for a pie eating contest (15:16). Awards are presented to exemplary students (15:42). The Air Force Times Award is presented (15:57). The finale of ‘Dining In’ is the address performed by an outstanding speaker of general officer rank (16:14). Colonel Robinson (16:23) introduces General John A. Lang; the Undersecretary of the Air Force (16:25) at the graduation ceremony. The Vice Commandant’s award is presented (16:44). The brass band blows (16:59) at the graduation parade.
