76274 WWII FILM COMMUNIQUE MEDAL OF HONOR WINNER COMES HOME

This Film Communique, Official War Film 35, was Issued by the War Department and Produced by the Army Pictorial Service with Cooperation of Combat Film Units from Signal Corps, Army Air Forces, Navy and Marines. This Film Communique consists of various segments:

00:44 Has Anybody Here Seen Kelly? Young American soldier(Tech Sargent Chuck Kelly), of Irish descent returns home after receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor for Bravery from Mark Clark in Africa, he knocked out 40 Germans in Italy in less than an hour and took command of a platoon and then of a company. He is seen spending time with his mother, visiting the barber and reflecting on the various ways Pittsburg, PA has changed to aid the war effort. “Two years of war changed Kelly, Two Years of war changed Pittsburgh”. Images of a 37 being assembled (06:10)

07:26 Task Force 58 This clip describes the U.S. Navy Flat tops, can launch 1000 planes each, and designed to reverse the direction of traffic in the Pacific. U.S. Marines Scenes change at 8:20 Firefight with Japanese, Tokyo Carrier Based planes being taken down, 428 were shot out of the sky on that mission and were recorded as a world record. Here at 10:48 we see what is described as a burning auxiliary gas tank dumped, plane comes in for emergency landing. 11:10 Marines land on Sai Pan, U.S. Takes Sai Pan and reinforces the troops in Japan.

Treasure Hunt 11:42 Footage of post war destruction battle junk collection. U.S. Service men (Collecting Company) go on treasure hunt with aid of Italian children being paid in candy to aid in collection of equipment.

Repair Battalion recovering and restoring scraps into usable materials. Italian women employed by army to stich battle torn fabrics into usable uniforms for American soldiers, blankets washed and returned into service.

14:14 Restoration of metallic goods, canteens gas tanks, mess kits, precision treatments. Scrap is salvaged and shipped back to the U.S.A.

16:10 Quiet Cities: City of Normandy in complete ruins, battles moved on. Narrator speaks of a Yank leaving town. Quickly changes into U.S. Invasion active war footage of tank fire fight, followed by Footage from plane taking out targets, Candy Stripes A20 Bomber. Units engaged in firefights called Snipers bullets “Incoming Mail”, fire fight with guns, incoming and outgoing fire, cannons, and surrender. The reality of the enemy and their threat means they were never to be trusted, booby trapped bodies, false surrender. Taking Normandy was part of the job, time for the soldier to move on and continue the fight
