Dating to the year 1964 before the Vietnam War was in full swing, but American advisors were on the ground, this U.S. Navy film presents a portrait of the nations of the Pacific Rim including Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea, and the Pacific Fleet. This includes the First Fleet, the 7th Fleet, and various groups including an anti-submarine warfare group. A large scale amphibious assault exercise is seen at the 18 minute mark. Also shown is monitoring of Russian shipping and patrol of the sea lanes including the Taiwan patrol. At the 24:30 mark, extensive footage of Vietnam begins with images of Saigon, and U.S. forces engaged against the Viet Cong as advisors. The V.C. are shown dropping homemade mines into the ocean to strike Vietnamese shipping vessels. Personnel are shown working as part of the “junk patrol”, advising the South Vietnamese in their operations.
