This Eisenhower era U.S. Navy film shows the service’s capabilities as it entered the Cold War. Featured in the film are the USS Saratoga (CVA-60) and an attack carrier task force armed with missiles and jet aircraft, and capable of projecting tremendous power anywhere in the world.
On 6 June 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower and members of his cabinet boarded Saratoga to observe operations on board the giant carrier. For two days, she and eighteen other ships demonstrated air operations, antisubmarine warfare, guided missile operations including a launch of the Regulus missile from a submarine, a cruiser, and an aircraft carrier, and the Navy’s latest bombing and strafing techniques. Highlighting the President’s visit was the nonstop flight of two F8U Crusaders, spanning the nation in three hours and twenty-eight minutes, from USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31) on the west coast to the flight deck of the Saratoga in the Atlantic. The USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear submarine, is also shown. The A-4 Skyhawk, A-3 Skywarrior and other aircraft are also shown operating off USS Antietam. The Terrier missile and the Sparrow and Sidewinder missiles are also shown in the course of the film, as well as the new (and never deployed) Regulus II supersonic cruise missile.
