75552 ” URBAN USES OF LAND FOR EDUCATION, CULTURE AND RECREATION ” 1968 URBAN PLANNING LOS ANGELES

This film from 1968 will take a look at land and how portions are designated in each state for purposes of education, recreation and culture. It uses Los Angeles, California as an example and was produced by Academy Films (:07). The first building looked at is the public library (1:05) and each city throughout the country has land designated for these. Inside, the librarian reads to children a story about Olvera Street located in the historic downtown area of LA, which the film then goes to showing it’s colorful shops (2:02). Shots of historic Spanish churches (2:28) as well as missions (2:47) point to California’s early history. The San Fernando mission is located 30 miles from downtown LA and children are crowded outside learning of how these were constructed by Spanish padres and Native Americans (3:09). A statue of Father Junipero Serra who was the founder of several missions in California follows (3:35). For educational purposes, states designate land for school buildings and playgrounds (4:08). A few shots of a black top playground (4:25), students in a junior workshop (4:38), math class (4:54), typing class (5:06) as well as the chemistry lab follow (5:29). The University of California Los Angeles UCLA is shown and is one of the largest of the state (6:04). An aerial view of the University of Southern California USC follows (6:34). States also set aside land for religious purposes (7:00) such as for churches and synagogues. For cultural purposes, the Los Angeles County Art Museum (7:11) is shown with large sculptures sitting outside the entryway (7:41). Outdoor theaters are also popular, such as the Hollywood Bowl which seats over 17,000 (8:25). The fountain sitting in front of the LA Music Center (8:53) and the Ahmanson Theater (9:13) are shown as other cultural installations. For recreation, states often have large outdoor stadiums like the Dodger’s stadium (10:06), and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (10:39) which is so large it is able to host multiple sporting events simultaneously (10:50). The Coliseum is located in Exposition Park as is the rose garden (11:14) and the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History (11:27) which follow. Prehistoric skeletons of animals and dinosaurs are pictured on the inside of the Museum of Natural History (11:48). States also often have large city parks (12:11) as well as zoo’s like the Los Angeles Zoo (13:04). Inside the LA Zoo, a polar bear (13:39), the ‘sun bear’ (14:16) and elephants are all viewed (14:40). Overlooking the Pacific Ocean and located near the Los Angeles Harbor, is MarineLand of the Pacific (15:16) and here guests can watch whales conduct tricks and jumps (15:56). Coastal cities also have miles of beaches for inhabitants (16:03). As it is California, the film wouldn’t be complete without Disneyland (16:26) which is a popular staple of tourists and residents alike. Popular Disney characters (17:07) and the Mark Twain boat (17:19) are among the entertainment here. The film then wraps up and closes with a montage of the previously shown locations and footage (17:41).
