Created in 1951, “Crusade in the Pacific” was an early television documentary that remains one of the most comprehensive looks at the Pacific Campaign on land, sea and air. In 24 separate 30 minute episodes, “Crusade” journals the War through tons and tons of basically uncensored stock footage, along with the timeless voice of Westbrook Van Voorhis.
This episode of Crusade in the Pacific, “Battle for the Marianas” looks at the Allied campaign in the Mariana Islands. It examines the brutal marine invasion of Saipan and the effort to push back the Japanese counter-attack in the Philippians sea. On Saipan , Allied forces eventually push all the way to Marpi Point point and take the island. Japanese soldiers and civilians frequently choose death over surrender. Later, the Americans successfully invade Tinian and later Guam.
