Produced by the U.S. Army this instructional training film from 1949 shows (and this description comes from the official film catalog) “the role of medical professionals in organizing the entire community to provide effective medical services in an atomic disaster, and suggests some measures which should be undertaken to prepare for such a disaster. At a medical society meeting the speaker reviews some of the problems, stressing the importance of public education. A ‘film within a film’ is shown describing the probable course of events following the atomic bombing of a city which has been well-prepared physically, psychologically, and medically, for such an emergency.”
The film features the YB-49 “Flying Wing” in the atomic bombing sequence and an incredible atomic bomb special effect, as well as an amazing simulation of a disaster — possibly filmed in the aftermath of the Texas City oil refinery explosion.
