“Seminole Indians of the Everglades, Florida” (1949) is a color, educational film about the Seminole Indians native to Florida. The film was produced by the Old Gold Cigarette Company (please note: CIGARETTES KILL AND CAUSE CANCER), and pays homage to the people that gave tobacco to the land by depicting their daily life, traditions and customs, and efforts to modernize. The film is composed of scenes of the Everglades and the wildlife that live there in addition to village men and women going about daily tasks like fishing and sewing.

Title page, opening credits, swamp land of the everglades, patches of sawgrass, white herons fly (0:06). Wildlife/ animals of the swamp lands: Alligator makes its way from grassy bank back into swampy waters (0:41). Cottonmouth / Water Moccasin snake slithers along top of water (0:50). Louisiana Heron (0:54). Flamingo (1:00). Cypress swamps: bald cypress trees populate waters edge, shade water (1:08). Cottonmouth continues to slither across swamp lands, dramatic music plays as footage cuts to other wildlife including raccoon, deer, herons in trees (1:14). Coral snake coils in sand (2:11). Flora and fauna of Everglades: birds of paradise, hibiscus flower, pink orchids (2:23). Seminole dugout canoe made from hollowed-out cypress log wades through lily-pad lined water (2:50). Seminole man plunges spear into water, catches fish; feeds a fish to alligator lurking nearby (3:18). Roseate spoonbill wades in water in search of food (4:16). Canoe wades through tall sawgrass, canoe comes upon nest of freshly hatched storks nestled into roots of mangrove tree (4:47). Sandhill Crane trumpets (5:26). Alligator nest made from mud and matted weeds, baby alligators roam in and around eggs in nest (6:19). Camera pans to mother alligator who opens mouth and hisses at canoe (6:35). Seminole village in the Everglades, straw huts called “chickees” constructed of palmetto leaves and cypress-log stilts, built onto high dry ground called hammocks (6:53). Seminole women and children wearing colorful tiered dresses sit and clean freshly caught garfish; camera pans baskets piled with descaled fish (7:30). Fish skins and scales boil in pot, prepared to be sold as sequins (7:52). Two children run to water’s edge from chickee and play with stick in the water (8:00). Diamond-back rattler snake slithers through grass (8:36). Two seminole men in colorful jackets with graphic print sit down by chickee, share a cigarette (9:10). Close-up pack of Old Gold cigarettes in man’s hand (9:49). Old man sits on rock smokes with long Seminole ceremonial smoke pipe; other man uses hollow forked stick (9:53). Seminole woman sits on grassy patch and uses manual Singer sewing machine; holds up finished skirt featuring colorful geometric designs on narrow bands (10:34). Young man traverses swamps using airboat (11:20). Man uses headlamp while standing on canoe to hunt for frogs in swamp (12:10). City by night: LED light signs line streets, (14:39). Destruction of swamp lands: Man stands on banks of swamp using surveyor engineering telescope, (15:08). Orange grove Massey-Harris farm tractor (15:37). Signs along tourist routes, alligator wrestling show at Musa Isle Seminole Indian Village (15:55). Exterior historic gov building, today Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center (16:44). Office Seminole Indian Agency, United States Office of Indian Affairs – superintendent looks over documents at desk (16:49). Sign at entrance of Brighton Reservation in Dania: Seminole Indian school for children, white teachers; Seminole mother and child at government-sponsored clinic (17:12). Herd of cattle, Seminole cattle business at Big Cypress Reservation (18:24). Meeting of people of tribe (18:49).
