Castle Films presents this ‘News Parade of the Year’ (:08) which will center on news highlights of 1946; looking at the world a year after the second world war had ended. The commentator is Basil Ridsdale (:12) and opens with the Philippians (:24). General Douglas MacArthur is pictured (:32) as he arrived from Tokyo for Manuel Roxas’ inauguration as the first president (:35). The Philippines flag is seen hoisted (:37) and parades take to the streets. In Rome, violence (:44) broke out as the House of Savoy ended it’s dynasty and a new flag is seen hoisted representing the new republic of Italy (:59). In 1946 in Trieste, riots broke out protesting the possibility of Trieste becoming a part of Yugoslavia (1:05). Footage of the violence between Yugoslavs and Italians follow including a shot of what was to be one of the most famed photographs of a rioter smashing a press camera (1:19). A long span of homeless Jewish refugees follow (1:38) as they were moved to Palestine and then to Cyprus (1:52). The Nuremberg Trials are next. The 21 defendants are filmed awaiting sentencing, specifically focusing on Hermann Goring (2:05) as he had on his person potassium cyanide which he would use to commit suicide with later. Frances Biddle is pictured (2:26) who served as the primary American judge. Lord Justice Colonel Sir Geoffrey Lawrence follows as the President of the Tribunal (2:32). Disaster struck in Belgium as a plane crashed (2:47). Rescue forces spotted survivors in the Newfoundland forests and shots of the wrecked plane are given (2:58). Of the 44 passengers and crewmen, only 18 survived (3:20). In Canada (3:34), Count Harold Alexander of Tunis became the new General Governor designate. He had served as the Allied Commander in the Italian campaign and as Field Marshall, had defeated the German army north of Rome and earned one of the first unconditional surrenders (3:52). 32 new cardinals were sworn into the Vatican (4:00) and crowds are seen gathering around St. Peter’s Cathedral. Pope Pius XII is filmed as he blesses the crowds (4:06). One of the five north American cardinals is pictured (4:15); Archbishop James Frances Spellman of New York. A span of the ceremonies includes the Pope blessing the large induction of cardinals (4:36). The Paris Peace Conference follows (4:42) at the Luxemburg Palace. Notable attendees are seen arriving such as Secretary of State James F. Byrnes (4:47), British Prime Minister Clement Attlee (4:52), as well as Molotov and the Russian delegation (5:04). Old automobiles are seen riding through the streets with crowds heavily lining the sidewalks as Detroit held a Golden Jubilee of the Automobile (5:36). Some of the cars shown had been built before the first world war (5:45). The annual Kentucky Derby follows at Churchill Downs (5:50) with 100,000 spectators watching. The winning horse, Assault (6:18) won a purse of $96,000. The Flying Wing follows (6:32) which was a Northrop YB-49 and it is seen given its first trial flight (6:57). The US Navy revealed a new weapon known as ‘the bat’ (6:51) which was a projectile on wings steered by an electric guiding device. A slew of them are filmed hitting targets with ease (7:19). The atom bomb was being tested for the first time in an isolated area in the Pacific Ocean (7:30) known as Bikini Atoll. Target ships are seen awaiting the bomb drop (7:35) and aboard ships men are seen lowering protective goggles over their face as even from a ten-mile distance away, injury was likely (7:46). After the bomb is released (7:51) the massive atomic cloud is filmed (7:54). The second test was conducted by a trigger ship (8:07) through radio impulses. The explosion and atomic cloud are again filmed (8:24). Radiation contaminated the water which rose up like a water wall from the explosion (8:46). The film concludes with aerial views of the explosion (8:53).
