70144 1939 NATIONAL AIR RACES AMATEUR HOME MOVIE CLEVELAND OHIO

Dating to September 2–5, 1939, this silent home movie shows the National Air Races in Cleveland, Ohio. Also known as Pulitzer Trophy Races, the NAR are a series of pylon and cross-country races that have taken place in the United States since 1920. The 1939 races were significant in that they were the last of the National Air Races to be held before World War II.

This film was amateur shot and not that impressive technically, but it does show Col. Roscoe Turner receiving the Thompson Trophy at 2:05. The woman visible at 2:39 in the film is likely aviatrix Jackie Cochran. Another woman appears on the grandstand at 1:50.The film also shows the grandstands and flight line, and parachute jumps (5:15).
