70014 1930s GERMAN FILM FISHING FOR COD IN ICELAND CODFISH INDUSTRY (SILENT MOVIE)

This is a 1930s era, black and white, silent film from Germany, presented by the German Government’s Institute for Film. The movie is about codfish fishing in Iceland. A barren valley is shown with a few structures as the camera pans completely around 1:00. A boat pulls into a wooden dock 1:15. A truck backs up to the boat. Buckets of live codfish are loaded onto the truck 2:10. The men slice the heads off the codfish 2:31. Two men work as a team cutting the heads off the codfish and then gut them 3:26. The carcasses of the codfish are rinsed in a bucket of water and then filleted 4:00. The men scrub the codfish to remove any excess bones 4:50. They rinse the codfish and put them in a large cart 5:05. Men carefully stack the filleted codfish on the ground 5:28. He then salts the codfish 5:40. The man makes several layers of stacked codfish 6:00. The camera pans over a huge stack of salted codfish 7:00. A man has a wheelbarrow full of codfish and dumps them before two women who clean the fillets 7:40. They use water and large brushes. Men bring more codfish to the women and dump them on the rocks 8:45. The fish are laid neatly out over the rocks 8:55. A tarpaulin is pulled back over large stack hardened, dried fillets which are loaded onto a pallet which are then carried by the men 9:35. Codfish fillets are laid out over the rocks 9:52. More fillets are carried by the men to be laid out 10:00. Young boys and girls lay out some codfish on the rocks 10:25. The codfish are stacked, wrapped in a tarp, and secured 11:15. Large stacks of wrapped codfish dot the landscape 11:30. A man stacks the dried codfish fillets in a wooden box for proper packing 12:25. He ties the fillets with string and then wraps the package in cloth 12:57.
