Opening credits: United States Air Force Training Film: Air Force Officer Customs And Courtesies, Military Obligations (:09-:33). Main gate of a USAF base. Lieutenant Hackley drives up and salutes an officer at the front gate. The car is parked. Lieutenant Hackley walks by another person, salutes and continues on. The Lieutenant goes to the personnel center where he doesn’t salute the woman. She checks her records and reviews files. Lieutenant Hackley drives in his car. An airman at the curb watches him, then walks by. Lieutenant Hackley visits a Sergeant and then a Captain. The Captain speaks with the Lieutenant. Lieutenant Hackley walks towards a small apartment, he seeks housing. Sergeant tells the Lieutenant how the ranking will work towards getting housing. Lieutenant Hackley walks down a sidewalk (:34-3:31). Officers salute one another as they walk. Lieutenant Hackley visits an office, sees a Sergeant. He goes into another office and sits with a Commander. They talk. Lieutenant Hackley shakes hands with another Lieutenant who only salutes the Commander. The two Lieutenants come to attention, salute the Commander, and then leave the office. The two Lieutenants stop and allow a Colonel the right of way. Security office, hand shakes around. Two Lieutenants in the Flight Planning Office. Hand shakes. Two Lieutenants walk side by side (3:32-5:54). A star is placed where a license plate would be on a car, for a ceremonial occasion. Two Lieutenants salute the moving car as there is an officer in the car. A USAF plane lands, the stairs are lowered, hand shakes around (5:55-6:54). Flight Planning Room – crew sit and review paperwork, the two men talk. Men join and also review the plans. They chat and then disband (6:55-9:15). USAF jets on a runway. A motorcycle drives towards a jet. A squadron commander arrives. Men stand next to a bomber. A B-52 Bomber races down a runway and lifts off into the sky. Lieutenant Hackley is in the hospital with appendicitis. Other junior officers visit him. A Major tells Lieutenant Hackley that he’s been promoted to First Lieutenant. Lieutenant Hackley’s wife talks with the Major’s wife (9:16-11:23). Lieutenant Hackley and his wife walk. They encounter the ceremony of retreat (or the retreat ceremony) which serves a twofold purpose. It signals the end of the official duty day and serves as a ceremony for paying respect to the flag. An officer exits a car. Others sit in a car. The ceremony goes on. The National Anthem is played as the USA flag is lowered and saluted. An officer gets into his car and drives off. Lieutenant Hackley and his wife walk away, hand in hand (11:24-13:44). End credits (13:45-13:56).
