68274 EVERYWHERE USA 1960s TRAVELOGUE FILM CAPE COD / CAMPTOWN RACES / ABINGDON BARTER THEATER AMERICA!

This late 1960s color travelogue film provides highlights of footage cut from other films in this series. It is narrated by Jack Douglas as part of the America! Television series. A clam bake in Cape Cod is sponsored by the Bass River Rod & Gun Club. Being prepared in baskets are clams, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, hot dogs, and sausages. Stones are heated in a fire and covered with wet seaweed. The metal food baskets are placed on top and covered with a sheet. The lobsters are placed on that and covered with a wet canvas to keep the steam in. The sheet is pulled back to reveal cooked lobsters (1:29-3:27). The Christopher Ryder House is shown in Chatham. A hobo banjo band performs for diners (3:28-4:42). The Camptown Races in Ashland, Virginia have horse racing, clowns passing out balloons, and people relaxing on the lawn. An open picnic basket lid displays plates and real cutlery. On display is an operating steam engine. People lounge under large umbrellas or wear colorful headgear to block the sun. A bag of silver dollars is suspended above the finish line of the mule race (4:43-6:39). Old Fort Monroe imprisoned Jefferson Davis following President Lincoln’s assassination (6:40-7:33). The Abingdon Barter Theatre yearly rewards a Virginia ham, platter, and an acre of mountain land. Winners include Gregory Peck and Ernest Borgnine (7:34-9:14). The Leska Bros. Circus display is part of the Harry Hertsberg Circus Museum in San Antonio. A mechanical clown greets visitors. Displays include circus wagons, handbills, and Tom Thumb’s carriage (9:15-10:19). An Eastern diamondback rattlesnake shakes its rattle at Ross Allen’s Reptile Institute. A rattler is agitated and strikes and breaks a balloon (10:20-11:15). The Petrified Forest National Park has large petrified trees and a display of polished petrified tree cutaways. A couple walks on the Agate Bridge. Petroglyphs are on Newspaper Rock (11:16-13:57). Conquistadors built the San Xavier Mission. A cat and a mouse are carved into the stone façade (14:01-15:12). Shown are photos of Frank Lloyd Wright, inside and outside views of Taliesin West, Mrs. Wright, and architecture students in action (15:13-17:37). The Chapel of the Holy Cross is at Oak Creek Canyon near Sedona, Arizona (17:38-18:12). The Great Masterpiece in Lake Wales was an enormous mosaic of Da Vinci’s “Last Supper” painting (smuggled out of Europe to avoid Nazis but no longer in existence) (18:13-19:07). “The Lord’s Supper” can still be found in life-size wax figures at the Christian Art Museum in Fort Worth (19:08-20:02). The American Wax Museum life-size re-enactments include Indians and William Penn, the drafting of the Declaration of Independence, Washington crossing the Delaware, and Betsy Ross sewing an American flag. Also shown are John James Audubon, Edgar Allen Poe, and Walt Whitman (20:03-21:13). Sculptures shown at the Rodin Museum are the Monument to Balzac statue, Meditation, The hand from the Tomb, The Cathedral, and The Kiss (21:14-22:24). Photos, carbines, ammunition belts, and Indian weapons are displayed at the Custer Battlefield Visitor’s Center (22:25-23:32).
