This black & white educational film from the Vietnam War era is about Southeast Asia and what’s going on in those countries looking to stave off Communism. This was made in 1968.
Opening: sky above Southeast Asia, a montage of horrific images: gunshots are fired, a hut burns, a body, a crying child, a fire blazes. Title: Outlook Southeast Asia (:09-:46). A map shows Southeast Asia: Philippines, Indonesia, Malayasia, Singapore, Republic of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Burma. Men and women stand and look. Faceless Asians masses. Oxen help people plow muddy fields. A woman trims a woven rug, a child’s face. A woman looks through a microscope. Polling Station, people cast ballots in a box (:47-2:57). Temples, Buddhist people pray. A flag is light on fire. Philippines rebellion from 1945-1953, burnt out buildings, upset children. Rebellion led by Ramon Magsaysay who holds a gun. he touches a child. A woman works. Indonesian troops march as Sukarno, the leader, salutes. Sukarno was friend with Communist China. In 1965 a rebellion and no communism, people riot, fires are set. Dead bodies litter the streets (2:57-5:07). Soldiers carry boxes and ammunition. Guns, rockets made in China. Soldiers from Australia and New Zealand have aided Vietnam, soldiers salute, trucks march. Men hold flags. Troops on the march. American troops are there to assist. Supplies are lowered by crane from a ship to Southeast Asian Countries. Sad faces of older men. Children stare. People gather food. Rice is the staff of life. Muddy fields. A man picks crops in the muddy water. Thailand people use insecticides. They spray a field (5:08-8:18). People work in the fields. A man makes clay crafts. Others sculpt with detail. Modern technological machines. Men work and use them. Coal and tin is mined. Aluminum Factory. Men and women work in the factory. Rubber industry factory. Women make shoes (8:19-10:53). Women sew and make clothing. Indonesia factory. Rural area, men move dirt and rocks. A man lays bricks. Jakarta, Bangkok, Saigon, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur are all getting more modern. Cars in a city. American movie signs. Burnt out buildings. Children cry. People flock and leave an area. Troops stand by (10:54-13:19). People take up arms and want to learn how to defend themselves. People learn about guns. Men with machine guns on patrol. Vietnam – the primary battleground. Planes drop supplies and allies parachute in. Men land on the ground in Vietnam. Dense jungles of Vietnam. U.S. soldiers on patrol. Americans in Vietnam fox holes. A Vietnamese man is interviewed by press. Injured are removed. A rainbow. Children are taught by a teacher. A student jots down notes. A woman tends to a baby and lays it down in its crib (13:20-16:50).
