“Industry On Parade was a television series created by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) from 1950-1960. The series consisted of weekly episodes that highlighted American manufacturing and business. Hundreds of companies and products were documented during the [program’s] decade-long run.”
In the December 1953 episode (164) of Industry On Parade, viewers learn about the harvesting and processing of cranberries. At a cranberry bog on Cape Cod, MA (00:48), men and women use a traditional scoop to harvest the berries. At the National Cranberry Association Plant in Hanson, MA, debris is removed from the berries using a blower (01:38). The soundness of the berries is tested by bouncing them, and then they are examined by a woman (02:10) as they move along a conveyer belt. A cook stirs a batch of cranberries in a large pot (02:36). The cooked cranberries are canned on the canning line (02:36), and then the cans are cooled in a roto-cooler. Finally, the cans of cranberries are boxed for shipping (03:44).
The next segment is “On The Map!” Two pilots look at a map while in the cockpit of a commercial airline jet (05:00). At the Jeppeson and Co. company in Denver, CO, women create new maps (05:36). A man prepares a new map for photographing and engraving (05:55). Etching emulsion is poured on a machine that creates the metal plates used for printing new charts and maps (06:18). A cartographer works on a topographical map (07:40).
At the Indiana Steel Products Company in Valparaiso, IN (09:13), magnets are produced using different methods. Men create magnets using molds, while a woman makes a magnet using powder metallurgy (09:44). The magnets are demagnetized prior to shipping (10:10).
The final segment of this episode is “Artistry In Industry!” At the Museum of Modern Art in New York, women browse displays of home furnishing goods from various American companies (11:32). Children look at various toy prints (12:24) in another exhibit hall.
