This film from Rockwell International pays tribute to the men and women who built America’s Space Shuttles. “To Build a Star” starts with footage from July 4, 1982 as the Space Shuttle Columbia glides to Earth following its 4th successful flight in space. At 1:00 the Space Shuttle Challenger is shown. The film also features appearances by President Ronald Reagan (2:00) and his wife First Lady Nancy Reagan. The film shows images of the planning, design and construction of the Shuttle orbiter vehicle, main rocket engines, solid rocket boosters and external propellant tank. At 5:25 the Columbia is shown on the launch pad at Kennedy Space Center on April 12, 1981 for its first flight in space. At 7:00 television images from the first flight in space are seen. At 7:20 the vehicle flies to a controlled landing at Edwards Air Force Base. At 8:46 Columbia makes an unprecedented return to space. At 10:28 Columbia is readied for its third return to flight. At 10:56 the shuttle lands in White Sands, New Mexico. At 12:00 it makes its fourth journey into space. At 12:42, June 30th, 1982 the Challenger is shown being rolled out. At 14:10 the Columbia comes in for its fourth landing, as Ronald Reagan provides voice-over proclaiming a “new era”. At 15:30 the Shuttle makes its way back to Kennedy aboard a transport aircraft.
Space Shuttle Columbia (Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-102) was the first space-rated orbiter in NASA’s Space Shuttle fleet. It launched for the first time on mission STS-1 on April 12, 1981, the first flight of the Space Shuttle program. Serving for over 22 years, it completed 27 missions before disintegrating during re-entry near the end of its 28th mission, STS-107 on February 1, 2003, resulting in the deaths of all seven crew members.
