64534 GROUND HANDLING & FLIGHT OF THE REPUBLIC P-47 THUNDERBOLT AIRPLANE WWII PILOT TRAINING FILM

This is the 1943 restricted training film No. 107-B, second in the series, and produced by the Army Air Forces with the Republic Aviation Corporation and is a Jam Handy Picture. It opens with Lew Lehr, a Vaudeville comedian, who accompanies a pretty young woman to the golf course to teach her the basics of golf. The camera focuses on her short flared shorts and her swing. She wears a tight sweater and ankle strap shoes (1:20-2:50). “Ground Handling.” A pilot makes an exterior check of a P47 (28283) before strapping into the cockpit. The crew chief and officer check in with him. The crew chief gives the pilot instructions on the cockpit instruments, including those for the gas selector, trim tabs, flaps, landing gear, oil gauges, throttle, generator switch, battery, cowl flaps, and tailwheel, all listed on a checklist. He holds the Energize switch in until the engine starts, and engages the propeller (2:51-6:30). The officer gives final instructions to the pilot, now wearing his helmet and oxygen mask. He talks to the control tower and is given permission to taxi to the runway, which is done in a ‘s’ shape. The wheels are just below the inboard guns. The pilot’s feet on the brakes is shown. He calls the control tower and receives permission to take off (6:31-9:14). “Take-off.” The throttle is moved forward and the plane quickly picks up speed and takes off. The wheels close up. The same film takeoff process is reviewed again. Another takeoff is aborted due to engine failure and the plane purposely spins on the runway (9:15-11:34). “Normal Flight.” The P47 moves through the clouds. The pilot checks the operating limits sheet and makes trim adjustments. The pilot practices steep banking turns in both directions. He also practices recovering from stalls (11:35-15:07). “Landing.” Adjustments are made to prepare for landing. The control tower soldier uses binoculars to spot the plane and radios instructions. The wheels are extended and the canopy is opened. A landing illustration is shown. The flaps come down, the plane is lined up with the runway, and make a three-point landing (15:08-18:00). If landing wheels don’t come down, the airplane is wiggled back and forth until they do. If the flaps don’t come down, the hand pump is used. A landing is aborted in which the plane comes in too high and fast. It circles and lands. The pilot’s feet on the brakes is shown. The ‘s’ maneuver down the runway is used. The crew chief guides the plane to a stop. The parking brakes are set, radio turned off, the engine cleared, and the idle cut off. Once the propeller stops, cut the mags, the battery and fuel selector are turned off, flaps down, generator switch to off, and flight controls locked. The pilot unhooks one side of his oxygen mask and removes his helmet (18:01-23:03). Previous scenes are quickly shown. A P47 does turns, dives, and rolls before firing at the ground (23:04-25:31).
