64504 YESTERDAY’S NEWSREEL 1919 / 1920 STEEL & COAL STRIKES NORMAN ROCKWELL CARQUINEZ BRIDGE

This Yesterday’s Newsreel film (episode 111) offers the viewer “television highlights of the news of yesteryear” by providing vintage clips of famous people and events from the first half of the 20th century. The episode begins with a look at the steel and coal strikes in 1919 and 1920. Steel workers walk out of a mill in Chicago. In the neighboring city of Gary, strikers watch after an explosion occurs inside a steel mill. Gary Mayor William F. Hodges stands with Army General Leonard Wood after Gary is put under martial law (01:30). Presidential advisor Bernard Baruch and Secretary of Labor William Wilson meet in October 1919 in Washington DC to discuss the strikes (02:08). In Beckley, WV, U.S. Army soldiers police strike areas during the state’s coal strikes. In the episode’s next segment, Mayor John Porter of Los Angeles greets new Hollywood actresses Linda Watkins, Conchita Montenegro, and Miss Helen Mack (03:24). Mayor Porter toasts the young women. New York Governor Al Smith visits Sing Sing Prison in 1920 and lays the corner stone for a new addition (04:48). In the “Personalities” segment, viewers see Max Reinhardt as he arrives in the U.S. (05:33), Norman Rockwell and his wife, and Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis working at his desk in Chicago before becoming the first commissioner of baseball. Next, footage shows the aftermath of a gas line explosion in London in 1928 (06:40). In May 1927, California Governor C.C. Young and Nevada Governor Fred Balzar participate in the dedication of California’s new Carquinez Bridge (07:20). In the episode’s segment on aviation, RAF pilots perform precision flying maneuvers in England (08:55). Paratroopers jump from planes and parachute to the ground. Pilots fly stunts just above the earth. In “Fashions of the Day,” a woman gets her hair styled in 1927. The episode concludes with two sporting events. In the second annual “Bunion Derby,” Johnny Salo wins the trans-continent race in Los Angeles (11:05). At Lake Washington, the University of Washington crew team beats the University of California Bears team.
