64114c INDUSTRY ON PARADE DISASTER PREPAREDNESS PACIFIC TILE ALUMINIZED FABRIC & METALLIC YARN

Industry on Parade was a short television program that aired in the U.S. from1950-1960. It was produced by the National Association of Manufacturers. The series demonstrated complicated industrial processes that transformed raw materials into finished products. Industry On Parade Preparing For Disaster is one of those black and white, public service, industrial films, probably produced in the mid 1950’s. Narrators used were Bob Wilson, Peter Roberts, and Radcliffe Hall. It was produced by Arthur Lodge Production, Inc. In 1953, Arthur Lodge formed his company and began producing his educational films. He wrote and produced more than 500 episodes for Industry On Parade.

The film opens with various look-ins of industry in the U.S. (0:10-0:39). A scene of various disasters that might occur in communities (0:45-1:00). Simmons Machine Tool Corp. building (1:02-1:14). They make the litter cot (1:15-1:54). Litter cot in use in the relief programs. Showing patients being transported by truck and by railroad box car (2:00-3:21). Inside a hospital, cots can be stacked for higher capacity (3:22-3:34). There is a price for our freedom (3:41-4:13). Ceramic tile being made at Pacific Tile and Porcelain Company, California (4:18-4:38). To make tile: a mixture of clay, talc, water, and other ingredients is pressed into a tile shape (4:49-4:56). They are sent by way of conveyor belt to be stacked for their trip to the dryer (4:57-5:27). The tiles are then put in a kiln for baking (5:29-5:37). Pigments and designs are added before glazing to add color and texture. A design is transferred to the tile using stencils (5:38-6:03). Texture can also be added (6:06-6:21). Back to the Kiln to be baked – this causes the chemically controlled colors to bake into the surface of the tile (6:22-6:34). Packaging the tiles to be shipped for sale (6:35-6:45). Application of aluminum to fabrics – Rolls of aluminum being made into yarn (6:53-8:02). Cut rolls into 2 inch strips (8:03-8:18). Further slit into the final yarn (8:22-8:39). Yarn is then wound on spools for shipping (8:40-9:14). Metallic yarn is mixed with other yarn to make cloth (9:16-9:40). Women shopping in a food market (10:23-10:28). Franklin, New Hampshire has a town discussion (10:59-11:44). Raising money to put up factory buildings (11:45-12:19). 1950’s gas station (12:20-12:23).
