This 1962 color film is an educational travelogue about various African areas and groups. It was produced by United World Films and photographed by Ronold (note: this is the film’s spelling) E. Shanin. The focus of this film is to educate viewers on the diverse African environment. The film begins with Victoria Falls in the Zambezi River, which doubles as the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in South-Central Africa (0:17-0:32). Flamingos eat as hippos and elephants run in the water (0:33-0:46). Gazelle graze and a wild dog looks at the camera (0:47-0:58). A male lion looks around while a female lion cares for playing cubs (0:59-1:13). Gazelles joust with their horns while a barred owl rotates its head to watch (1:14-1:26). A truck drives through the safari. Wildebeest struggle to find water (1:27-1:53). A near empty lake has fish washed up without enough water (1:54-2:05). Butterflies drink water from the damp soil (2:06-2:18). A truck enters the Ituri Rainforest in the modern-day Democratic Republic of Congo. The Bambuti indigenous pygmy group shown includes women weaving and working with their children. (2:19-3:03). A Bambuti man smokes, and decorative markings are placed on women. (3:04-3:35). A group of Bambuti ride in the truck, giving a tour up the Ruwenzori Range, often called the “mountains of the moon” (3:36-3:50). Safari guides plan their trip, men carry the cargo, and goats are brought for meat (3:51-4:41). Animals along the trek are shown, including an elephant and a cheetah (4:42-5:03). Food is prepared by the locals, an ape eats from a tree, and they continue to climb (5:04-5:49). The snowy peaks and ice sheets are shown at the top of the Ruwenzori Mountains (5:50-6:29). The film ends with volcanic activity as Lake Kivu, which makes up part of the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, erupts lava and spews volcanic ash (6:30-8:14).
