63894 1965 CAREER GUIDANCE FILM “TECHNICIANS IN OUR CHANGING WORLD” COMPUTERS, MEDICINE & RESEARCH

This 1965 color educational film about the many different technical career choices is from Staton Films, Los Angeles, and narrated by Vic Perrin. Technicians are shown in different roles. They adjust knobs and dials on large computers and pieces of equipment. They are shown in a college lab and on-the-job training (:28-2:22). An African American student uses a micrcoscope (1:27). A Type 310A Oscilloscope is shown (2:24). Employees sit in a classroom to learn data processing methods. The inside cabinet wires are shown on a piece of computer equipment. A wall has large IBM computers on it that use magnetic tape. An English sentence is translated into Spanish by the computer (2:45-4:30). A Bourns 35005-1-203 electrical component is shown. Draftsmen, model makers, and prototype makers use their skills to start the project. A Hewlett Packard 5233L Electronic Counter is shown. Illustrators and technical writers create manuals for the finished part (4:31-6:52). Male students at a junior college learn about aircraft hydraulic systems and jet engines. Female students (and one male) sit through a class on nurses training. Student nurses are shown working at a hospital. Doctors and nurses perform a heart operation. A medical technician watches the patient’s blood pressure and another hooks up the heart-lung machine. A medical illustrator makes drawings from the sketches made during the open-heart surgery. A research technician assists a biologist. A small animal heart is kept beating in a clear container. Various drugs are introduced and the reactions of the heart are recorded. Students learn in a lab setting using microscopes (6:53-10:25). Navy sailors march in time. Some are taught to be welders, radiomen, and dentists, among other careers (10:26-11:18). Repeat footage is shown. High school graduates sit in caps and gowns. Snippets are shown of some career choices: working in a film shop, as a mailman, as a barber, as a car mechanic, and as a baker. Some will attend college or specialized technical training schools (11:19-13:07).
