Made by Young America Films as part of a series of educational films about citizenship, this 1950s short illustrates how a community can solve problems together. The film shows the importance of civic action and personal responsibility. In the film a local citizen in Elmdale — a fictional town that represents main street USA — named Bert Henderson discovers that there are no doctors living within 20 miles of his home. He then works with the Kiwanis Club and local leaders to recruit a doctor. The sought-after doctor is played by “Carnival of Souls” director Herk Harvey. Arden Booth narrates. The film ends with a statement about the power of the individual and the memorable line at 24:40, “There isn’t anything you can’t do, if you believe in it, it’s right, and you go to work on it.” “I guess that’s democracy.”
