63844 HOW WATER COMES INTO YOUR HOME “MAGIC PIPES” 1950s EDUCATIONAL FILM PLUMBING

This 1950s black and white film about water, gas, and electricity in the home is a Churchill-Wexler Film Production directed by Gunther von Fritsch. A boy scoops water into a bucket from a stream and starts up a steep hill. His sister joins and they carry it together, Jack-and-Jill style (:14-:44). The boy turns on the kitchen water faucet and fills a glass. Faucet handles are turned at a sink and the bathtub. A close-up of the water at the bathtub faucet is shown. Adult feet move the water around in the tub, which has a rubber stopper (:45-1:15). A plumber installs kitchen sink pipes in a new house construction. The camera follows pipes out to a trench in the yard leading to the larger water pipe at the street. The flowing reservoir hole is shown, followed by children running on top of large exposed water pipes and white-froth tumbling water. Water mains are installed in the street (1:16-3:14). The girl squirts her brother with a garden hose. The boy plays with a makeshift boat in the tub. A washing machine agitates. The children drink from water glasses. The flashback shows them carrying the bucket to their parents at the campsite. The father washes his hands in an enamel bowl, tosses the water into the bushes, and dries his face with a towel. The boy washes his hands in the 1950s bathroom. The plumber at the construction site screws in the waste pipe. A look under the house shows where the bathroom waste pipe joins it and is connected to the street sewer pipe (3:15-4:48). At the campsite, the children carry bundles of sticks. The gas knob is turned to light a kitchen stove burner. The plumber installs the gas pipe at the house construction. Gas pipes run from an oil well at the top. A large diameter gas pipe is installed. Lumps of coal are placed in burlap and hit with a hammer. The pieces are dumped into a coffee can and placed on a burner. The lid has a small hole in it from which smoke escapes. A lit match lights the smoke on fire. The boy in his sleeveless t-shirt turns on the hot water faucet in the bathroom. Hamburgers cook in a frying pan (4:49-7:15). A Coleman lantern is cleaned and filled with kerosene. The girl turns on the light in her bedroom and lays on her bed to read a book. An electrician strings wire through conduit. These are connected to overhead lines, then to towers, and then to power plants where turbines churn out water. An experiment shows a machine connected with electric wires to a tiny bulb. The crank is turned and the light bulb lights. House lights turn on at night. A 1950s canister vacuum, metal oscillating fan, and electric mixer in action are shown (7:16-9:55). The smiling boy scrubs his legs while in the bathtub. The bottom of his foot sticks up in the tub (10:07-10:25).
