This 1964 black and white documentary film “Survival! Andrea Doria” details the sinking of the SS Andrea Doria on July 25, 1956. July 17, 1956. Passengers ballroom dance and drink (4:53-5:18). Two women approach the chapel. Others play shuffleboard, tennis, sunbathe, and swim (5:23-5:44). An indoor bar serves patrons. Chefs prepare elaborate meals. Wine is poured into a glass. Entertainment includes a costume dance (5:46-6:14). Activities, dining, dancing, and a band are shown (6:15-6:35). July 25, 1956, passengers relax and take photos on their way back to New York (6:36-6:55). The SS Ile de France and MS Stockholm pass with the Statue of Liberty shown behind (6:56-7:25). The Andrea Doria sounds its horn in dense fog. Inside, passengers eat from a buffet line. The fog horn blast is shown. Two couples play cards. A tray holds different alcoholic beverages The ballroom is full of dancers as an orchestra plays (7:26-8:40). A compass measures points on a map (8:43). A bartender smiles and shakes a drink before pouring it into a glasses (8:58-9:05). The Stockholm moves through the water. Its radar screen picks up a blip (9:07-9:42). Fog envelopes the Andrea Doria. The Stockholm’s radar screen shows a close vessel. The wheel is turned to the left. The Andrea Doria sees the Stockholm appear through the fog and sounds the emergency whistle. The crash occurs off-camera (9:44-11:45). Emergency signals are telegraphed. The Coast Guard receives and sends teletypes. The crash site is plotted on a map (11:46-12:22). Newscaster John Coleman broadcasts from a plane flying over the crash. The Andrea Doria lists heavily to one side (12:24-13:22). The bow of the Stockholm is broken off (13:25-13:32). Survivors and rescue ships are shown. The Ile de France returns rescued passengers. Onboard, mothers bottle-feed babies (13:23-14:23). The captain and crew are in lifeboats. Coast Guard helicopters lift the critically injured from the Stockholm (14:24-15:48). The Andrea Doria begins to sink, shown from multiple angles, and disappears (15:50-16:52). A man removes the “Andria Doria Arrives” sign at the pier (17:00-17:12). Survivors arrive on the rescue ships. People anxiously wait on the pier, including actress Ruth Roman, separated from her son, who arrives safe. Wounded are put into ambulances. Reunited people embrace (17:14-19:33). Survivors are interviewed by news crews, as are the two captains (19:35-23:38). A scuba diver swims over the sunken ship (23:41-24:10).
