63784 YESTERDAY’S NEWSREEL 1929 PRISON BREAK IN CANON CITY F. SCOTT FITZGERALD TOKYO EARTHQUAKE

This black and white film is one of the episodes of “Yesterday’s Newsreels”, an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features eight segments of historic highlights. Break for Freedom 1929. Prison buildings burn during the riots at the Colorad State Penitentiary in Canon City. National Guardsmen arrive with 75 millimeter guns. Gutted cellblock #4 is shown, with its knocked walls that secretly held guns. The courtyard destruction is shown (:39-1:59). Stars in Garden 1931. Ballerina Harriet Hoctor performs on stage at Madison Square Gardens (2:00-2:50). She is followed onstage by tap dancer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson (2:51-3:23). Nature’s Deep Freeze 1934. The Hudson River is frozen solid. Coast Guardsmen test the depth and the Coast Guard cutter Comanche breaks through it to rescue boats trapped in it. A barge is towed through the now open path (3:26-4:36). Personalities 1919. Newspaper columnist Heywood Broun is shown with his grandson (4:39-5:03). German composer Richard Strauss is shown at home and in 1923 with New York City Mayor Hylan (5:05-5:26). 1922, F. Scott Fitzgerald writes at an outdoor desk. His wife and young child join him (5:28-5:50). Made in Japan 1923. Buildings lie in ruin after an earthquake and tidal wave hit Tokyo. Citizens examine what remains. Tent shelters are made in the park. Children in kimonos play in large sewer pipes. Thousands flee by boat and train in fear of additional earthquakes (5:52-7:58). Aviation 1933. 15 passengers board a Curtiss T-32 Condor II biplane. Inside the cabin, a woman wearing a 1930s wool felt hat removes her coat with the help of a stewardess. The view outside the window is New York City. The stewardess passes out newspapers and lights a woman’s cigarette. The plane flies over the Washington Memorial and lands in Virginia (8:00-9:25). Fashions of the Day 1932. A model wears a full length fur coat made of silver fox. Another wears a coat of eastern mink over a 1932 dress with a low V back and high rounded neckline. Another models a cape of silver fox, followed by one of ermine with white fox trim. A shorter sports coat is made of lamb and has puffed sleeves. One has a bow at the neck and another has a scarf that matches the coat lining (9:27-10:44). Sports 1929. Singer Al Jolson gets putting tips from PGA golf champion Johnny Farrell. Their conversation is played with the film action as an early talkie recording (10:47-12:30).
