63484 1951 5TH ANNUAL NATIONAL CONVENTION AND REUNION OF THE AIR FORCE ASSOCIATION

Produced by the 9076th Voluntary Air Reserve Group, the 5th annual National Convention and Reunion of the Air Force Association is a short film that recaps the events in Los Angeles, CA during August 1951 as well as a promoting the association and the Air Force. The film opens with two large bombers flying in the sky then landing. American Actor Reed Hadley poses as an Air Force officer who talks to the camera about the need for more planes in the Air Force; he also narrates the film. Boeing B-29 Superfortresses take off from an air field in March 1945 and head to Tokyo (02:32). Bombers drop their massive payloads on the city. Aerial footage shows the bombs detonating as well as the devastating aftermath in Tokyo. Hadley then reads the AFA’s constitution (06:08). The film shows the Ambassador Hotel in L.A. (07:40), which is the site of the conference’s headquarters. James Jabara, America’s first jet ace, dances with a woman during the festivities. Jacqueline Cochran speaks at the conference. Thomas K. Finletter gives the keynote address at the Air Power Banquet (09:10). At the Wing Ding and Air Force Pageant at the Hollywood Bowl (10:00), Bob Hope goofs around with Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin. Jane Lyman and Lana Turner stand with Bob Hope, before Lana Turner takes the stage to sing. Rosalind Russell and Carey Grant chat with Bob Hope backstage. Members of the Air Force perform a drill. Hope introduces Esther Williams and Walter Pidgeon. Then, people perform the pageant on the venue’s stage: it is the story of the birth of flight, the beginning of the Air Force, and the rise of American air power. Next, the film shows viewers the highlights from the presentation of the Air Power Awards (15:37). Recipients include General Curtis E. LeMay, James Jabara, Dr. George E. Valley, and General Carl A. Spaatz. Hadley then reads the AFA’s Statement of Policy that was drafted during the 1951 conference (16:50). Footage shows bombers on an air field with Air Force crews standing at attention. Jets fly in formation and members of the Air Force march. The film then concludes with Tom Lanphier, Jr., chairman of the board of the AFA (19:10), talking to the camera and explaining what it means to be a member of the AFA.
