Encyclopedia Britannica (:41) presents “That War in Korea”, a documentary about the Korean War of 1950 to 1953. Originally produced as a Project XX documentary. The film opens with USS Pickaway (:55). Pickaway shuttled US troops from Japan to Pusan. US soldiers bid wives and families goodbye at the start of the war (1:02). Wounded are drug across land (1:47). A funeral service follows (1:57). Richard Hansen narrates (2:37). Ginza street (3:17) in Tokyo is littered with pedestrians as a traffic cop works to direct the flow. Japan is pictured after the close of WW2. Servicemen and women in kimono pass street vendors (3:26). The Heian-Jingu Shrine is photographed by US troops stationed in Japan (3:31). The Buddha statue (3:52) is visited. Night life for the troops included neon night clubs (3:54), alcohol and Japanese women (4:09). North Korean troops appear (4:54). Ryu Kyong Su; the divisional commander and army corps commander, is pictured (5:02). The army was supplied with Soviet tanks manufactured in Vladivostok, Russia (5:12). Farm lands of South Korea are tended (5:56). The Republic was established under the shield of the US (6:15). A map notes the 38th parallel (6:33). A fence is blown (6:42) as on June 25th, 1950, the North Korea People’s Army crossed into South Korea. Civilians of southern Korean flee with their belongings (7:25) and homes burning (7:29). Warren Austin speaks to the Korean plea to the United Nations (8:11). An F6F-3 Hellcat appears (8:31). The narrator dictates Truman’s call for support (8:38). F4U-4 Corsairs of the 7th US Fleet of the Western Pacific run off the AC Carrier deck (8:42). USS Herbert J. Thomas appears (8:56). Foot soldiers march in June of 1950 (9:02). Grenades are thrown, explosions erupt (10:10). Soviet tanks roll over ground (10:36). Bazookas blow back (10:37). Shells are loaded into mortars (10:43). Dead litter the ground (11:00). Civilians are pictured executed in heaps with hands tied (12:22). A quote is heard from a soldier a part of the conflict (13:23). The final foothold of August of 1951 was Pusan (13:40). Aerial views capture Busan Port (13:48). The US Army Autocar U7144T drives by (14:21). Rounds blow from 13-pounder anti-aircraft guns (14:43). General Walton Walker and General William Dean held Pusan (15:06). Supreme Allied Commander Douglas MacArthur calls on the marines (15:48). The brass band of the first Marine division blows (15:53). Scenes follow from September of 1950 as Marines of X Corps prepare to land on Inchon for an amphibious assault (16:51). USS De Haven (16:56) follows. Marines load bullets (17:21). Long range naval guns are aimed (18:05). Shoreline installations erupt in smoke (18:16). MacArthur watches (18:23). Night scenes are light up by roaring shells (18:50). LVT’s bring the 1st and the 5th Marines to the shore (19:29). They scale the seawall (19:44), push towards Seoul past dead smoking tanks (20:44) and burning rubble (21:11). A great shot captures a grenade toss and subsequent explosion (21:25). Civilians gather water (22:41) to put out fires as combat ceased. MacArthur drives a Chevrolet Fleetline (23:05) for the Korean Capital building in Seoul (23:10). Syngman Rhee (23:18) delivers a thank you to MacArthur. Forces of the 8th army continue northward. A sign marks the crossing of the 38th parallel (23:58). Flame throwers blow over ground (24:41). Grenades are tossed into hideaway positions (24:54). The 8th army and allies move for the Valley of Yalu (25:35). Winter camps are pictured in Chosin Reservoir (25:55). Forces enjoy Thanksgiving turkey (26:17) and build a snowman (26:35). Communist Chinese troops (27:04) move into Korea. Wounded are catered to (27:37). Refugees prepare to flee (28:34). The Douglas DC-3 flies out from Hagaru-ri with wounded aboard (29:12). The Stinson L-5 Sentinel takes off (29:52). The first Marine division is pictured cut off in the frozen snow (30:32). They begin an 80 mile march (31:05) up frozen mountains. Faces of Chinese prisoners are pictured (32:49). The Fairchild C-82 drops supplies (34:13). Napalm is dropped on the Chinese fighters (35:11). Forces move back down the mountain (36:08) and load into LVT’s (36:56). Scenes follow from the Hungnam evacuation (37:20). Demolition charges destroy Hungnam harbor (38:24).
