“Sounds That Can’t Be Heard” is an episode that takes viewers on a tour of the industries that are using or developing ultrasonic technology. A man performs a hearing test with woman to see the range of sound she can hear (00:44). The episode shows a farm where two men operate an electronic device that produces ultrasonic sound. The device is used to beam ultrasonic waves on a bull to determine how lean its meat is. At Gulton Industries in Metuchen, New Jersey (02:01), a variety of ultrasonic devices are manufactured. Women build the parts for ultrasonic devices (02:40). At the Danbury, CT plant of Sperry Products, Inc., reflectoscopes are manufactured by women on an assembly line. At Republic Aviation in Farmingdale, Long Island, NY (04:01), men immerse aluminum in a tank of liquid to test its conduction of high frequencies. The pattern of movement is recorded with ultrasonic waves to determine flaws in the metal. A man tests a railroad wheel for soundness using ultrasonic technology (05:55). A Raytheon ultrasonic impact grinder is used for precision cutting and drilling (06:18). People clean glass using ultrasonic vibrations in a liquid bath (06:55). A man cleans grease off machine parts in a solution using ultrasonic vibrations (07:40). At a supermarket, ultrasonic vibrations are used to weld tin foil for packaging cheese (08:22). An Army Engineers research boat, the HC Rickett (08:57), motors out in the harbor with the New York City skyline in the background. The ship uses sonar equipment to record the depths of the harbor.
