Produced by Martin Bovey Films and directed by Bon D. Grussing, Old Virginia is a short film that takes viewers on a historical tour of Virginia. The film opens with a shot of Mount Vernon (00:48) and the plantation’s view over the Potomac River. The film shows gardens on the grounds as well as the nearby Pohick Church (in Lorton, VA). The film then takes viewers to Jamestown, starting with the north bank of the river (02:10) and the Tercentennial Monument (an obelisk). Viewers also see an old church and statues of Pocahontas and John Smith. The next stop is Williamsburg (03:15). Viewers are treated to footage of the rebuilt capitol building, the grounds of the magazine in Williamsburg where fighting erupted during the beginning of the Revolutionary War (04:11), the Governor’s Palace and its grounds (06:10), as well as the campus of the College of William and Mary (06:56). The film also shows viewers the Williamsburg jail, where two men reenact being put in a pillory. Next, the film goes to the University of Virginia campus at Charlottesville (08:15) and Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello plantation. At Morven Plantation (Morven Farms) in Piedmont, VA, thoroughbred horses run on the rolling hills (09:55). The film shows cattle and hogs, fields of red clover (10:53), and people farming tobacco. A man drives a tractor tilling up the earth. The film ends with scenes of the Blue Ridge Mountains as a car drives along a highway that cuts through the range (11:53).
