This 1965 British documentary film looks at the development of the young modern nation-state and highlights some of the country’s people, culture and events, cities, and regions. The film opens with footage of the snow-capped peaks of Pakistan’s Karakorum and Himalayan ranges. A stream runs out from a under a snow field. People herd cattle down a rocky slope. A river of white water rushes through a forest (02:24). Young boys and girls learn in a classroom (02:57). Muslim men pray at a mosque (03:48), and the film shows the tomb of the founder of the modern state, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The film then shows a panning shot of agriculture land, bricks at the ancient city of Mohenjo-daro and more ruins of the famous seat of the Indus Valley civilization. Viewers see jewelry of the Indus Valley women and small figurines on display at a museum (05:27). Cattle pull a small cart down a dirt road near one of the great rivers of the country (05:54). There is a shot of the arid Sindh province (06:07)—camels are led across the desert terrain by a man. A man drives a Caterpillar 463F scraper (06:55); a CALTEX oil tanker truck drives along a construction site. Footage shows the construction of new canals to harness and divert water from Pakistan’s major rivers. Water flows through the Warsak hydroelectric dam (07:55). People work in a modern cotton mill spinning cotton (08:23). Viewers see men working at a precision tool factory and a cable factory. There is a shot of a farming village with electricity (09:24): two elderly men sit inside a home and smoke from a hookah. In east Pakistan, people move boats out on a body of water (09:55). Rain pours down on the region during monsoon season. Footage shows the flooded lowlands from the monsoon rains at the river deltas of the Brahmaputra and Ganges. Viewers see rice fields (11:15), and men as they load barrels onto small boats for transportation via river. There are several shots of the cities of east Pakistan. Students study medicine and nursing at a university (12:19). A helicopter takes off from an airport (12:50). A Pakistan International Airlines passenger jet lands in Karachi. The film shows the streets of Karachi: a camel pulls a small cart, and people pack the streets and outdoor bazaars. A man looks at a pair of slippers. Silversmiths work with the metal (14:50). Boys weave a type of fine cotton called Dhaka muslin cotton. There is a good shot of mosque and courtyard in the midst of dense urban buildings (maybe in Karachi). A bus leaves for Khyber Pass (16:25); men look at a plaque giving the history and points of interest of the pass. Donkeys carry goods up the pass, past terraced farming. The film then shows Badshahi Mosque in Lahore (18:20),

Shalimar Gardens, and fountains and pools in the old palaces of Lahore. There is a model of the modern city of Islamabad (20:14). Footage shows new residential buildings in Islamabad. The film then takes viewers to the world-famous Lahore Horse and Cattle Show (21:12). Men parade across the grounds twirling staffs and playing bagpipes and drums. The film shows horses, dancing camels, dancing horses, and men participating in a horsemanship competition known as tent pegging (23:10). There is a much smaller tent pegging competition outside a small rural village. The film shows a polo match in Pakistan (24:33). There are shots of mountain valleys; a man fishes on a river (25:00). Viewers see wildflowers, mountain valleys where a man herds sheep, and the hill people of the Northwest Frontier, the Pathan, performing the Khattack sword dance at night (25:55). The film concludes with footage of sunset over the rivers of Pakistan as they run into the sea.
