63054 1950s GAG NEWSREEL ” HOLLYWOOD HEADLINES ” SWIMSUIT FASHION SHOW & MODELS CARRY THE MAIL

This short film Hollywood Headlines was a morale-boosting gag created during the Korean War by the “Moviegoers League of America, Inc.” This issue —volume 1, number 1 and we don’t believe there was ever a number 2 — was actually produced by Carmel Productions. It begins with coverage of a record heatwave hitting Hollywood. Local businessman Patrick O’Toole sits in the shade, combating the heat by fanning himself and drinking ice-cold lemonade (00:40). A boy rides down a residential street, carrying the “Sunday chicken” home for dinner (01:19), while an ingenious man wears a hose-powered shower to keep him cool while mowing the lawn (01:44). The next segment, “International Affairs: Hollywood’s Celebrated Peacemaker Returns Home,” shows the railroad station (02:16) where members of the press wait for the arrival of Mr. Casper White (02:51), supposedly the most peaceful man in the world. The next segment features women from Hall’s Manufacturing Company putting on a beach fashion show (03:23), modeling swimsuits for their friends and colleagues. In “Home Front: Girls Carry Mail—Males Carried Away” (04:43), an attractive young woman delivers mail to an elderly man, who is quite taken with the young woman and must be reined in by his wife. The next segment takes viewers to the end of an 18-month strike at the Royal Ice Cream Company (06:37), where owner Mr. Royal and union rep Mr. Gray sign a pact ending the strike. However, the pact is ripped up when Mr. Royal and Mr. Gray escalate tensions with an ice cream fight. The final segment features the Hollywood arrival of Lord and Lady Harper from England (09:41).
