62644 1950s TOUR OF LONDON, ENGLAND “THIS WORLD OF OURS” TRAVELOGUE

This black and white travelogue, This World of Ours London, was produced by Carl Dudley, an American film director and producer, for the Dudley Pictures Corporation that he founded in 1944. This travelogue is one of a series of thirty This World of Ours videos he produced in the 1950’s. This one was produced in 1951.

Intro with music (0:08-0:26). The first thing you see is a shot of Big Ben, or the Great Bell of the clock, completed in 1859 (0:27-0:44). Scenes of double decker buses scurrying through the streets around Piccadilly Circus founded in 1819 (0:45-1:08). London’s Bobbies keep the area safe (1:08-1:13). A view of a London Royal mailbox, or pillar box, and a London Telephone booth (1:14-1:30). Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square is viewed with many people walking around viewing the pigeons that are there (1:31-2:00). Westminster Abbey can be seen with its history (2:01-2:16). Bobbies stand outside of 10 Downing Street where the Prime Minister lives (2:17-2:25). The Cenotaph at the Palace of Whitehall dedicated to England’s war heroes (2:26-3:32). Along Whitehall Street you will find the Treasury and the War Office (3:33-2:51). The long time tradition of the Changing of the Horse Guard can be seen (2:51-3:32). St. Paul’s Cathedral, built by Sir Christopher Wren, for Protestant worship (3:33-4:04). Taking a cruise down the Thames River, you will see Tower Bridge, completed 1894 (4:05-4:27), and the Tower of London, built in 1066 (4:28-4:37), with their Yeomen of the Guard (4:38-4:28). Charing Cross railway station was important in World War I (4:29-4:56). Many people walk the busy London streets and crowd Petticoat Lane (4:57-5:50). Major transportation to London is by airplane (5:51-6:02), and train (6:03-6:07). Rows of housing is where the people live, and a milk man delivers the milk (6:08-7:00). Stroll down Fleet Street, newspaper row, with the Daily Express being the most important paper (7:00-7:23). Hyde Park is shown where many speeches are given (7:24-7:49). Port of London holds the British ships that come and go with cargo (7:50-8:20). The Bank of England’s formidable structure is shown along with the financial district and the stock exchange (8:21-8:53). What’s a visit to London without seeing Buckingham Palace, built by Edward Blore, and completed in 1850, with the changing of the palace guard (8:54-10:51). The travelogue finishes by showing the Military Band at Buckingham Palace (10:52-11:52).
