Produced by Celluloid College in 1947, Basic Motion Picture Technique is an educational film on the basics of filming a motion picture. The film “has been carefully designed to teach exactly what it is that makes a movie interesting and enjoyable to an audience. It teaches technique, the ‘art’ of using the camera.” In this second part of the film, viewers learn about three more techniques, then they see them all applied in a silent short to conclude the educational film. “Lesson #6: Newsreel Technique” shows how to film an event for a newsreel (00:25). A man sets up a camera at the Mt. Vernon baseball field; footage includes shots of baseball players pitching, batting, running the bases, as well as shots of the crowd, a group of three children watching the game while eating popcorn and drinking soda, and other cutaway scenes such as scoreboard updates. In “Lesson #7: Build-Up” (03:43), a cameraman looks at film reels as his son looks on. The cameraman then films a build-up using his son writing a letter. The letter writing is spliced with footage of what the boy did during summer vacation: the boy and his dog relax at a cabin, the boy swims in a lake and fishes upstream above a waterfall, and, lastly, visits a fair where he rides a rocket ship ride, a boat ride, and enjoys an ice cream cone. The next lesson is on composition, and a cameraman scans his subject looking through his finder, framing the picture of a road next to a field. There is a shot of foliage in the foreground with city in the background (08:08); a trolley passes under an arch. The film shows scenes with and without foreground composition to demonstrate the difference. These shots include footage of New York City (08:58), a train engine passing by on a track, a farm, a college campus, and statues. The final lesson is on indoor lighting. A woman sits on a couch as a man checks the lighting (a type of lighting called flat lighting). The film then shows backlighting technique as a man sits with woman and kisses her. The film reviews the types of lighting best used for specific genres. The film ends with a short homemade photoplay in which the viewers are asked to identify the different techniques used, which is the tenth and final lesson, “Applied Technique” (27:04). The short film is a story of a man bathing his child and the difficulty of doing the seemingly simple task. The two girls doorbell ditch the man in the midst of giving the child a bath, and he becomes exhausted from running up and down the stairs answering the door and phone all while trying to finish giving his young child a bath. His wife comes home to find him passed out on the bed next to the baby in a crib.
